Alien: Romulus
‘The final fight between Rain and Cailee Spaeny’s Offspring becomes a comic book cover in a stunning retro work of art. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the last chapter of Foreigner The franchise, which began with Ridley Scott’s seminal 1979 sci-fi horror, follows Rain, his android brother, Andy (David Jonsson), and other crew members as they encounter a Xenomorph threat aboard an abandoned space station. The film was a critical and commercial success, and the Alien: Romulus the ending in particular was a big talking point due to the introduction of the Offspring, a Xenomorph hybrid.
However the Offspring clash is one of the Alien: Romulus‘most terrifying sequencesa new comic-inspired artwork shared by Swangzhe on Instagram adds a retro and colorful touch to the meeting. The art shows Rain, in silhouette, as she faces off against the lanky, skeletal Offspring. The image also features close-ups of Rain and Andy, as well as the more traditional Xenomorph and facehugger at the top. Check out the art below:
What The Offspring’s Intro Means for The Alien: Romulus Sequel
Rain and Andy’s story is confirmed to continue
Alien: Romulus ends with the Offspring being launched into space and Rain and Andy on their way to Yvaga III. The threat has seemingly disappeared for these two surviving characters, but it has now been confirmed that development is underway in a Romulo sequence. 20th Century Studio head Steve Asbell shared the news in late October, teasing that Spaeny and Jonsson’s characters will be a part of whatever comes next, saying: “I want to see what their story is.”
The Offspring itself may not be returning, but its first introduction shows how Alvarez will approach the next chapter. Alien: Romulus Reviews were generally very positive, with praise aimed at how it recaptured the magic of the first film while also inserting its own horror sensibilities. Since Alvarez will likely return to command Alien: Romulus 2audiences can apparently expect this mix of old and new once againmeaning additional Xenomorph mutations could be on the way.
Our opinion on Alien: the offspring of Romulus
The Next Movie Can’t Just Repeat Romulus’ Offspring Trick
Although response to the film has been generally positive and currently has an 80% critics and 85% audience score on Rotten tomatoesthe one complaint that came up frequently was that parts of it felt a little too familiar to what had gone before. While the mix of homage and innovation worked for me, the film’s standout sequence was the battle of the descendants at the end, which was also the film’s biggest left turn.
Now this Alien: Romulus introduced the franchise to a new generation of audiences, it would be exciting to see Alvarez lean into that approach in the sequel while maintaining that core Foreigner atmosphere while offering more surprises and innovations. After The Offspring, however, the next film’s big surprise may not just be another Xenomorph form, which means Alvarez will have his work cut out for him in terms of keeping things fresh.
