The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 and beyond was discussed by the head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke, given the high viewership the show received in season 2. The rings of power Season 2 ended with over 55 million people watching the series since the new episodes began their release, placing the show in the top five original series produced by Prime Video. While it’s unclear how this translates in terms of viewer retention and minutes watched, reports indicate that the show is on track for a Season 3 confirmation soon.
Talk to VarietySalke expressed happiness about the success of The rings of power Season 2 stated that the show reached 150 million viewers since it first began in 2022. The Amazon MGM Studios head also indicated that the series has a 50-episode commitment that they plan to continue withAlthough it is also something that will require many viewers to maintain the right to make the show. Check out what Salke had to say below:
Of course [The Rings of Power season 2 had] Very different levels of marketing and all that [to Season 1]. But that being said, over 55 million people at this point have engaged since Season 2 launched. And if you look at the long-term trajectory, which is how the company looks at an asset like that, it’s a long-term investment in that franchise. […] More than 150 million viewers are watching and participating in the show. So I feel really good. I think we all do.
[Regarding if there will be any change to Amazon’s 50-episode commitment] I don’t think so. [That] Commitment is never the thing that is driving what we do. We will continue to make the show as long as we see global customers loving it and watching it to the point where – it’s a business. Obviously, we need a large number of people to show up. And there are a large number of people, so there is no debate whether the show will go on or not.
The show is all set to continue for 34 more episodes
Before Salke’s comments about the possible continuation of the show, it was previously reported that The rings of power Season 3 may be renewed by the end of this month. Given her positive feedback about the show, Not only will it be renewable, but its original planned storyline will also come to fruition. This means that showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay will likely see the fantasy series through to the end, with the rise of Sauron across Middle-earth and the creation of the One Ring not far from happening.

The show will probably go on until the end

Since Salke is extremely positive about the viewership of The rings of powerIt looks like the show will be renewed for season 3, along with its 50 episode schedule. Although the series had a low viewership retention rate in season 1, The overall performance of season 2 probably won’t be clear to the public for some time. Even so, the Amazon MGM Studios boss seems happy with the show’s overall performance, meaning there’s a strong chance it will continue for many years to come, as long as viewership remains steady.
As far as the storyline itself is concerned, The rings of powerThe timeline is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, About the rise of Sauron, the creation of the rings and his eventual defeatleading into The Lord of the Rings. With 34 more episodes left to depict his rise, the show seemingly has a lot of space left to depict all the events that are yet to unfold. However, long waits between seasons could be the show’s bane if it’s in the cards until season 6, and the series won’t end until 2032 according to its current release schedule.

Since the show has a sprawling story covering everything from the history of Hazad-Dam to Númenor, 50 episodes could be necessary to develop every part of Middle-earth that is focused on. But, since The rings of power Season 2 reviews criticized the show’s slow pacing and churning narrative, It is unclear if viewer retention rates can be maintained if total glaring problems continue to grow. However, given the tens of millions of people the series has reached, it doesn’t sound like a problem for the series to justify its existence if it keeps loyal viewers invested.
