According to the director, Phoenix was on set, fully decked out in his period costume, when he declared: "I can't do this." Scott was shocked, and Phoenix's co-star Crowe intervened to say that the film was "terribly unprofessional." When asked how he kept the actor on the project, Scott simply mentioned that he is "very good friend of Joaquim'S." Check out Scott's full quote below:
Scott: He was dressed as a prince saying, “I can’t do this.” I said, “What?” And Russell said, “That’s terribly unprofessional.”
Interviewer: How do you convince someone to stay?
Scott: I can act as an older brother or father. But I'm very good friends with Joaquin. “Gladiator” was a baptism of fire for both of us at first.
