The MGM + series seems to be a much more typical exploration of the noble deeds of the character, returning to Robin as a hero against corruption at the hands of the nobility. What seems to change from past retellings is an emphasis on the differences between Robin and Marian, who are framed as a Saxon and Norman respectively in the wake of the Norman invasion of England. This name adds a new layer to their dynamic with a Romeo and Juliet tale of star-crossed lovers from opposing sides, potentially with their slow-burn romance as a key appeal of the show.
Our thoughts on Robin Hood's new TV story
The character still holds much appeal to viewers
Of all the characters adapted to screen from classic literature and folklore, Robin Hood is perhaps one of the most overlooked figures. From black-and-white productions to animation, to digital film, the ideals behind this character will always resonate with audiences, as the character represents a battle against the corruption of the rich and powerful for the good of the less fortunate. Even if the examples are more comedic, like Mel Brooks Robin Hood: Men in Tights And fears brief musical cameo, the values are always core to the character.
