Our Take on Death Race Coming to the Max
The Meg is now on the streamer
Statham is now one of the most prolific action stars around, and his filmography is filled with titles that make for streaming viewing fun. Death Race may not be the first title that comes to mind when choosing a Statham film to stream, but it occupies a special niche on his resume, being one of the star’s few sci-fi offerings. Max does indeed have Statham’s other notable science fiction titles, Meg and its sequence Meg 2: The Trenchany of which can be paired with Death Race for a fun, campy Statham double feature.
Director Anderson Death Race It may not be as satirical as the original 1975 film, produced by Corman and directed by Paul Bartel, but it contains some worthy action, and Statham’s simmering presence is always appreciated. The overall cast is solid, thanks to strong supporting actors like Joan Allen, Ian McShane, and Tyrese Gibson. There’s even a voice-only appearance from David Carradine, who starred in the original film as the pilot Frankenstein.
Critics were surprisingly harsh in their assessment of Death Race when it was released in 2008, as reflected in the film’s recent 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nearly 20 years after its initial release, the film may now be ready for a reputational upgrade. Then again, maybe those critics were right in 2008, and Death Race It really is just another ordinary, brain-dead action movie. Starting December 1st, Max subscribers will be able to draw their own conclusions about whether the action-packed remake will perform well in 2024.
