After The Exorcist: Believer failed to relaunch the classic horror series, Blumhouse went back to the drawing board and announced a new installment in The Exorcist franchise with director Mike Flanagan. Halloween reboot director David Gordon Green directed Blumhouse’s first attempt at the beloved horror franchise in 2023, and Believer follows a pair of girls who are possessed by a demonic entity that tests the faith of their respective parents. The beleaguered horror franchise was expected to follow in the footsteps of Green’s aforementioned approach Halloween.

Unfortunately for Blumhouse and Universal, The Exorcist: Believer It flopped with critics despite making a lot of money at the box office. This failure left Universal nervous about continuing the planned trilogy and the announced sequel. The Exorcist: Deceiver, was removed from the schedule. The project was in limbo for months as work went on behind the scenes to try and save the fledgling franchise, but now it has been announced that a new entry in the The Exorcist franchise is under construction that will replace Deceitful fully.

While a number of details remain unknown about the latest attempt to resurrect the troubled horror franchise, the latest news has Mike Flanagan discussing The Exorcist. Known as an expert on modern-day horror, Flanagan spoke in detail about his new approach The Exorcistsaying I really saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. Despite promising such a terrifying experience, Flanagan acknowledged the tremendous pressure that comes with such a hallowed horror property.

We are not making this easy on ourselves. (Laughs) But I’ve always felt that there’s no point in going into a franchise or a property that’s so monolithic unless there’s something new that you can bring. I pursued The Exorcist very aggressively because I was convinced I had something I could add.

This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done in the franchise – something that honors what came before, but isn’t based on nostalgia. I really saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one is more intimidated than me.

Considering the unfortunate history of Exorcist franchise, Blumhouse may be tempting fate by releasing a film on a day considered unlucky.

Shortly after Mike Flanagan was hired, Blumhouse announced a release date for the director’s radical new take on The Exorcist. In keeping with the chilling tone of the franchise, the new film will premiere in Friday, March 13, 2026. Considering the unfortunate history of Exorcist franchise, Blumhouse may be tempting fate by releasing a film on a day considered unlucky. However, considering the critical failure The Exorcist: Believerthings couldn’t get much worse.

The film will not be a sequel to The Believer

Although story details about the planned sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver, were hazy at best, at least some wires could have been transferred. However, with Blumhouse’s new plan to abandon its franchise and reboot, it’s impossible to say exactly what will happen in Mike Flanagan’s new film. Exorcist film. The film can take up a page of Believer and tell another story involving the demon Lamashtu, or an entirely new demon could be introduced.

Blumhouse announced that Flanagan’s opinion would be a “radically new“approach to The Exorcistbut it is not very clear what that approach might be. Flanagan’s works often feature a rich and diverse cast of characters, and he has always excelled at giving audiences a reason to care about the people in his stories. This kind of personal connection is crucial for entry into the The Exorcist series, and it’s what many of the sequels failed to capture from the original. The franchise has consistently failed to live up to the first film and it may be Flanagan who finally turns things around.
