What does this mean for Red
Red One did not have a long theatrical window
RedThe streaming release date means the film will have less than a month of exclusivity in theaters before it hits streaming. Effectively, this will ruin RedThe chances of reaching more significant box office milestones as viewers will likely opt to watch the film on Prime Video this weekend once it becomes available on the streaming service. This is somewhat surprising based Redrecent record, as it was in the top 5 at the US box office this week and last week.
That being said, Red significantly underperformed expectations across the board. The film was made with a huge budget estimated at $250 million. With the cost of marketing and advertising increased, Red it would have to earn between US$500 million and US$625 million to break even. The film didn't come close to that total, grossing $32.1 million and grossing $163.9 million at the global box office to date. Although it managed to cling to its box office top 5, it would be impossible for Red recover your budget right now.
Our take on Red One's initial transition to streaming
Red One could perform well in streaming
While RedWhile the film's transition to streaming may seem a little premature, there's a good chance the film will perform much better on streaming than in theaters. Red will hit Prime Video well enough before Christmas that it won't have the maximum amount of holiday movie competition, but it could still appeal to viewers looking for a unique way to get into the holiday spirit. Even though Red can't fully recover at the box office, it will at least be good for the film to potentially top the streaming charts soon if all goes well.
