RedOpening weekend projections continued to decline. The film, directed by Jumanji: Welcome to the JungleJake Kasdan, starring Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson as hacker Jack O’Malley and North Pole security commander Callum Drift, respectively, a mischievous and likable duo who must work together to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) and save Christmas. THE Red The release is positioned as the first big-budget tentpole of the 2024 holiday season, hitting screens a week before the simultaneous premieres of the big blockbusters Evil and Gladiator II.
Put Varietyfrom Saturday morning, Red is projected to earn a total of $30 million in its 3-day opening weekend at the national box office. While it’s hitting the low end of Friday’s deflated projections of around $30 to $33 million, that gross is still more than enough for the film to claim the top spot at the domestic box office for the weekend. He was diverted Venom: The Last Dance falling to second place, ending the superhero sequel’s three-week reign at the top of the charts.
However, this debut is still pales in comparison to the film’s massive reported production budget of $250 million. Despite being the best opening weekend for an Amazon MGM Studios release since Creed III hit theaters in March 2023, Red continues a string of disappointing theatrical releases for Johnson, whose recent work includes 2023 Black Adam (which did not break even despite earning US$393.5 million), 2022 DC League of Super-Pets (which probably barely broke even at $207.6 million) and 2021 Jungle Cruise (which grossed just $220.9 million against a $200 million budget, likely premiering simultaneously on Disney+).
