The new iteration takes place in an entirely new dimension and timeline, one in which the Power Rangers are considered legendary dissidents who have been suppressed by the alien ruling class. While the series has yet to debut its first metamorphosis, we have a better idea of who the next rebellious teens with attitude really are.

In Betterall but one of the newest Rangers are students at Angel Grove Universitya military school designed to train Earth’s diverse sentient species to join the Eltarian Empire, Earth’s de facto global government. After Eltar saved humanity from a horde of alien monsters, they served as Earth’s “benevolent” leaders for decades. However, for those not born into the noble classes, life is oppressive and rigorous, with citizens of the lower classes facing daily harassment from the police. Hence the need for a new team of Power Rangers, willing to face the enemy that calls itself “protector”.
Red Ranger leader Lauren Shiba is a longtime rebel and Morpher heir whose parents were taken and killed by the Eltarian government. The most interesting members of the rookie team are Markon and Jun. Markon is an alien refugee, forced to flee Earth after the destruction of his home world, which has been subjugated to the less privileged class of Eltara. Meanwhile, Jun is Eltarian and the son of a prominent admiral. Uniting unlikely allies is a mutual interest in the original Power Rangers, mixed with a desire to change the status quo.

The Franchise’s New Threat Looks Fantastic, Yet Grounded
It wasn’t until BOOM! The studios took over comic book publishing that Power Rangers it felt like it could be considered an emotionally adult franchise, much less pull off major reinventions of the franchise’s classic characters. The original series proved that while the light-hearted, over-the-top moments that define Power Rangers still present, the characters and audience were open to a more mature narrative. This is exactly what Better continue doing: Create a rich narrative that explores more complicated themes while letting your creativity define the fantastical elements of the series.

Since the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series first aired in 1993, the rotating team’s enemies are usually dishonest madmen and agents of evil empires. The franchise has always had clear and defined threats, with most of its “surprise” villains being known bullies and snobs outside of fights. However, Power Rangers Prime the great threat seems more real than any other. The real world doesn’t have kaiju or space witches, but it does have corruption and systematic oppression. Power Rangers has always been a show about hope; I hope you always have friends to take care of you. I hope heroes rise up when evil is near. I hope anyone can be a hero, whether adults, children, or talking alien dogs. But how can we find hope when the enemy cannot be defined by a single person, but rather by the rules that everyone must follow – that is the question Power Rangers Prime hopes to respond, and so far, it appears to be an exciting ride.
So far, the cast of Rangers in this series is diverse and rich in personality. In the first issue only, similar anti-government revolutionary stories like the anime Geass Code, or Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson Transmetropolitan comes to mind.
