One of the biggest lore changes in Power Rangers The franchise’s history takes place in comic books. BOOM! The studio’s comics have continually found new ways to reimagine the classic Power Rangers story, as well as reinvent the franchise’s classic characters. As a continuation of the show, it provided the franchise with the opportunity to recontextualize the series’ major points in new ways.
Among classic ideas reinterpreted for modern times Power Rangers the franchise is coming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 by Kyle Higgins, Hendry Prasetia, Matt Herms and Ed Dukeshire, which changes the plot of Zords vs. Monsters. There was a time when in-universe Zordon introduced a full-scale rule for the Rangers: not to bring out their zords until the monster grew up. The emergence of the Black Dragon changes this dynamic in a way that has major implications for the differences between the heroes and villains of this world..
Power Rangers Black Dragon Zord Explained
The solution to the origin of the hybrid Zord and Monster
In the TV show, Tommy Oliver notably left Rita Repulsa’s side and joined the Power Rangers, but the comics show that this is not a betrayal she would take lightly. She uses her iconic (but underrated) henchwoman Scorpina to get revenge by forcing Finster (another underrated monster) to create a duplicate of the Dragon Dagger to defeat the Green Ranger’s Dragonzord. Scorpina’s plan is foiled and she is taken to the Command Center, but as tensions rise, the chaos energy of the Dagger duplicate is fueled by Tommy’s anger, exploding and causing the Command Center to explode.
When the smoke clears, it turns out that the destruction of the Dagger opens a portal to another dimension, and the Black Dragon appears through it. The Black Dragon is initially introduced as a mysterious monster, capable of growing to the size of a giant monster at will and shrinking back down to meet the Rangers at eye level.. He also has a sonic scream that causes the Rangers to pass out. Additionally, once he steals and uses the Blue Ranger’s Power Coin as an access point to the Morphin Network, he completely neutralizes the Rangers’ powers.
In due time, Tommy and Billy find a way to destroy the Black Dragon, but, strangely enough, this monster dematerializes in the form of metal parts, revealing itself to be a Zord and not a monster. Trini soon discovers that the Black Dragon was built from parts that are exactly identical to Tommy’s Dragonzord. It soon turns out that the Black Dragon was created by Lord Drakkon and belongs to him.an alternate universe version of Tommy and the franchise’s main villain. Whenever the Black Dragon spoke, it was Drakkon communicating from the Coinless World.
How Black Dragon Broke the Rule of the Zord vs. Monsters Franchise
In the pilot episode of the series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers In the TV show, Zordon lays out three basic rules for being a Ranger: “Never use your power for personal gain… never escalate a battle unless Rita forces you, and lastly, keep your identity a secret.” As for “never escalate a fight unless Rita forces you to,” this specifically applies to the Rangers using their Zords. Their combination of Giant Zords and Megazords is enough to win the battle immediately, but if they pitted their skyscraper sized zords against a normal sized monster, it would be unfair and heroic..
This explains why the Rangers always delay using their Zords rather than pulling them out at the first sign of danger. This is also reason enough to explain why the series used the common formula of waiting for the monster to grow up before introducing the Zords. To do otherwise would mean breaking one of Zordon’s rules. While the heroes don’t break the rules in this story arc, watching the monsters break the rule themselves is practically a game changer.
What happened when Power Rangers broke a franchise rule?
Knocks Rangers out of the game
Future issues since his debut will show how the Black Dragon is unlike anything the Power Rangers have faced before. This is a monster/Zord that could switch between growing to fight the Zords and shrinking to fight the Rangers.. One second, Black Dragon is fighting Green Ranger on the ground, and moments later he grows up to punch Dragonzord in the face. The next moment, he shrinks to pilot the stolen Triceratops Zord and then grows to fight the Megazord.
This is a monster that is actively knocking the Rangers out of the game. The Rangers don’t need to escalate the battle as the monster escalates and even de-escalates the battle whenever it pleases. The moment the Rangers encounter the Black Dragon, they think that they will have to take out their Zords until the Black Dragon shrinks down to their level. This is the monster that Power Rangers I can’t prepare because the Black Dragon always plays with an unfair advantage.
