Power Girl’s mysterious (and possibly backstabbing) date gifts her an Asgardian axe

Power Girl #12 variant cover

The cover art by Paquette and Prianto intriguingly combines the mystery of The Ax with Power Girl’s romance with AxelDepicting the Asgardian kneeling before Paige and presenting her with the massive weapon. The pose, reminiscent of a proposal, is likely an intentional choice by the artist. Notably, Paige appears to accept the axe, as she is shown holding it after presumably taking it from Axel when he offered it. This could suggest that their relationship is moving in a positive direction and that Paige has forgiven him for the disaster of their first date, or it could simply be a red herring.

While it may be a coincidence, it is intriguing that Paige’s potential love interest has a name so similar to the weapon he gives her. This similarity raises questions about whether Axel’s character holds more significance than we realize. Until August 28, this is all just speculation. However, if Paige accepts the long ax and incorporates it into her heroism, it will significantly set her apart from the rest of the super-family, who rarely rely on weapons since their powers are their primary strength. Given how ornate Paige’s ax is, it will be fascinating to see if it enhances her powers or possesses unique abilities.
