Pokémon TCG Introduces a Surprising New Type of Promotional Card in 2025

THE Pokémon Trading Card Game will introduce a new type of promo card next year, which won't be legal for use in games, but should still be a fun collectible for some players. In addition to selling individual boosters, the Pokémon TCG also sells many of its products in special boxes. These collections often come with promotional pieces such as giant cards, posters, or figures, along with occasional exclusive promotional cards.

In 2025, the Pokémon TCG will introduce a new type of promotional item to its boxed collections. According to the Pokémon TCG news website Poké Beachthe Pokémon TCG will launch a special collection for the next Journey Together set that includes jumbo size lenticular cards. Lenticular cards use a special material that causes the image to change depending on the viewing angle, allowing the image to "move" or switch between characters. THE Pokémon TCG has only released one lenticular card in its history - a Deoxys card that was used to promote the Deoxys Destiny film. The new Special Collection will be launched on April 11th.

What is the Pokémon TCG Journey Together set?

Journey Together will bring back trainer Pokémon cards for the first time in decades

Journey Together is the second set scheduled to be released in 2025, following the release of the Prismatic Evolutions special set in January. Journey Together will feature the return of Trainer's Pokémon, a special type of Pokémon card tied to trainers from various Pokémon games. While Trainer Pokémon don't have special mechanics on their own, they often benefit from synergies between Pokémon cards or receive special boosts from various types of Trainer cards.

The new set will also have several special boxes in addition to the Special Collection. PokeBeach also informs that an ex-collection box will be released that includes promotional cards and postcards, the last of which was not released for the Pokémon TCG in more than 20 years. An ex-Premium Collection will also be launched in April, including some type of acrylic standee. No additional details or price ranges have been released for any of these new sets.

We prefer to see exclusive promotional materials rather than exclusive promotional cards

Pokémon TCG Set for Battle Partner Owners

As a Pokémon TCG collector, one of my recurring frustrations about these special sets is that they often contain exclusive premium cards. Although players can acquire these cards on the secondary market, I still don’t like the idea of cards being “locked” in a box that costs $20 or more.

I prefer to have cool promotional materials like lenticular cards and acrylic stands that can be used as a fun touch for collection displays. I also like that Pokémon TCG is getting more inventive with its boxes, which could help provide more incentive to buy them in the future.
