Elio is one of Pixar’s most anticipated films in recent memory, and the promise of horror references makes me more confident than ever that it will be the studio’s best original project in nearly a decade. After the success of From the inside out In 2015, Pixar struggled to find its next big original hit, but nothing matched the film’s success. The lack of relatable and memorable stories left the studio feeling a bit cold; however, Inside Out 2The incredible box office performance is encouraging for Elioas are its director’s horror comments.
After Adrian Molina left the project, Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian took over directing dutieswith the latter mentioning some potential horror elements. According to Empire’s Ultimate 2025 Preview, Sharafian took inspiration from some classic horror films and stated, “I’m always trying to make it weirder and a little scarier, to follow that PG movie line..” Given the recent format of Pixar films, Shi and Sharafian would have been forgiven for playing it safe, especially with Molina’s delayed departure Eliorelease date. Instead, the project’s new direction convinced me it will be iconic.
“Sci-Fi Horror References” Are Exactly What Pixar’s Elio Needs to Stand Out
Pixar’s horror references prove the studio is taking some much-needed risks with Elio
Sharafian’s mentions of sci-fi horror references are exactly what Elio It needs to be Pixar’s best original film in a long time. While there are positive elements when it comes to the studio’s recent work, there haven’t been many risks to help these projects stand out. Although I personally liked it Elementary Due to its slightly unique concept, it didn’t do anything special that we haven’t already seen in other Pixar films. Therefore, the idea of Elio having some slightly darker scenes with high stakes makes me instantly more interested, as the directors are clearly trying to do something different.
Of course, it is unlikely that these references will be too intense considering the target audience, but Toy Story 3 had many scary and slightly disturbing scenes that helped it become one of Pixar’s best sequels. Assuming Elio can utilize horror in a similar way, the film could become extremely memorable as the rest of the story feels light-hearted. Catching the audience off guard by having some seemingly sinister moments when Elio first meets the aliens can add a sense of danger that is quickly defused once his more wholesome nature is revealed.
Still, if Elio manages to implement these concepts well, I’m confident it will be one of Pixar’s most interesting films in years and I’m very optimistic about its chances of success.
Elio already looks like Pixar’s best original film since Inside Out
Elio looks full of personality and has a truly unique premise
With the exception of CoconutPixar has not had an original IP gross greater than $500 million at the box office worldwide since 2015. From the inside outbut Elio could finally change that. Although Coconut was a complete success, it did not reach the same heights as From the inside outnor did it have the same kind of franchise potential. While Elio It’s also unlikely to get a sequel any time soon, the compelling premise, stunning visuals, and Pixar’s return to form point to a positive reception that could give it longevity.
The film’s delay could have hampered its momentum, but the recent teaser trailer indicates that Elio still has a lot of charm and personality, despite going through major changes. While Pixar’s original film plan suggested it might be seeking sequels to move the studio forward, Elio it can be the perfect reminder that new concepts still have value. So far, marketing for the film has been strong, and with years of buildup and anticipation, audiences may be intrigued to watch the film, especially since From the inside out 2 proved that Pixar can still deliver high-quality projects.
Although the family-friendly nature of the trailer should be enough to sell Elio for younger viewers, teasing horror references are a good way to win over a slightly more mature audience.
Although the family-friendly nature of the trailer should be enough to sell Elio for younger viewers, teasing horror references are a good way to win over a slightly more mature audience. Therefore, if Elio continues to highlight some of its unique selling points, I’m confident it can attract a lot of attention, and if it gets its execution right, it will be Pixar’s best original release in about a decade.
Pixar needs to get Elio right after mixed receptions for recent original films
The studio’s best recent projects were all sequels
Given how long it has been since Pixar had a hugely successful original film, it is important that the studio does not waste Eliothe potential. CoconutThe box office gross of $814 million, along with its strong audience and critical reception, makes it Pixar’s last major non-sequel hit. In terms of ratings, recent outings have still performed well all things considered, but there hasn’t been the same buzz around these projects, with fewer people going to see them. Therefore, Elio It doesn’t just have to be good, it has to be the kind of movie that gets people talking.
Horror elements are a great place to start, but it still needs something more to ensure theaters are packed for one of the studio’s most unique films. Pixar has undoubtedly been a big part of many people’s lives and that’s why I want Elio be so successful and regain the magic of your early years. However, it still has some huge obstacles in its way, and viewers’ lack of interest in recent originals is at the top of the list, but I’m hopeful Elio may overcome this and become a classic animated film in the process.
