The Josh Brolin/Peter Dinklage starrer Brothers is a great reminder to check out an underrated 2020 rom-com. Brothers is a riff on the Schwarzenegger/DeVito comedy TwinsWith Brolin and Dinklage playing criminal twin brothers who reunite to pull off one last score. The figure of Brothers 2024 is what makes the movie click, with the leads sharing great chemistry, while Glenn Close plays their untrustworthy mother and Brendan Fraser is the maniacal police officer chasing after them.
Despite the large ensemble, Brothers Has received mixed to negative reviewsAnd now sits at 41% Rotten tomatoes. Regardless, the comedy seems to have done well for streamer Amazon during its first week of release, with some viewers really enjoying the chemistry between Dinklage, Brolin and Closel. Brothers 2 is another question. The film is also director Max Barakov’s first in four years, following the surprise critical acclaim that greeted his timeloop romance. Palm Springs.

Max Barbakov’s Palm Springs movie is a great follow-up watch after Brothers
Palm Springs remains an underrated rom-com in 2020
Movies that remix Groundhog Day have almost become a subgenre unto themselves. Beach of tomorrow (AKA Live the repeat) is the blockbuster version, where Tom Cruise’s soldier is doomed to repeat the same day where he was killed during an alien battle, while the Happy Death Day Movies are a slasher take on the same formula. 2020s Palm Springs is very much the romantic comedy version, where Christine Milioti and Andy Samberg play two strangers who attend a wedding – only to find themselves caught in a time loop.
In stark contrast to the lukewarm critical response to Max Barbakov’s brothers, Palm Springs earned an incredible 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie has a lot of fun with the central premise, but at its heart, Palm Springs is a surprisingly sweet romance. His two leads are both deeply flawed – which only makes them more interesting to root for. In stark contrast to the lukewarm critical response to Barbakov Brothers, Palm Springs Earned an incredible 95% on Rotten tomatoes. Of course, RT scores shouldn’t be the only way a film’s quality is judged, but it does underline just how much the 2020 film is clicking with critics and viewers; The audience popcorn meter also stands at 89%.
Palm Springs and Brothers both take riffs from iconic 80s and 90s movies
Maybe Brothers 2 should introduce a time loop
Max Barbakov must be a big fan of 1980s and 1990s cinema since his first two movies have multiple nods to the era. Palm Springs is one of the best Groundhog Day-inspired moviesWith the premise that gives the characters a lot of time – literally – to get to know each other properly. It also explores the obvious subtext of Samberg and Milioti’s characters being trapped in the same bad habits and routines that hold them back in life.
The Twins‘ Inspiration on Brothers Feels even more obvious than the obvious, though the latter plays like a minor, harder-edged take on the concept. From the mismatched brothers setting out on a wacky road trip that involves their mother being chased by a relentless pursuer armed with a shotgun, both hit on many of the same plot points. Brothers Nods to Clint Eastwood Either way but independent Series tooWith the scene with Moke (Brolin) being attacked by a rather lovable orangutan named Samuel.

It parodies the strange relationship between Clint and Clyde the orangutan, while taking it in a Phil Dark direction. tonal, Brothers also feels in line with the foul-mouthed buddy comedies of the 1980s, esp. Midnight RunWith Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin.
How Brothers’ family-centered comedy compares to Palm Springs’ history
Family drama is at the heart of both Brothers and Palm Springs
Brothers There seems to be a definite theme in Max Barbakov’s work, with family dynamics being the key to both. despite bRothers Centered on a somewhat toxic brotherly relationship, there is still genuine love and affection beneath all the dysfunction. If Brolin’s Moke was smart, he would have just walked away from his brother and mom around half time, but after a wild night of drinking, he almost can’t stand the bond between them.
This complex dynamic is what drives Brothers And even the film’s villain Farful (Fraser) is motivated by his own terrible relationship with his father. While Palm Springs is largely focused on the central romance, it too Finds Miliotti’s Sarah struggling with her relationship with sister Tala (Camila Mendes) – and the guilt of sleeping with Tala’s fiance before the wedding.
Brothers And Palm Springs Both have a dark sense of humor about their locale, but beneath their cynical exteriors there is a warm too. They’re about flawed characters learning to become… well, a little Less flawed and make some positive changes in their lives. Both films also end on hopeful notes – but don’t pretend that their protagonists have magically evolved into the best versions of themselves.
