The Penguin’s “Victory” Over Salvatore Maroni Explained
Deluding himself that he finally won Sal
After Sofia Gigante kidnaps Oz’s mother, Francis, Salvatore Maroni and his men arrive to defeat the Penguin before telling him that he will have to give up his drug operations and return the Bliss product to Sofia in exchange for her mother’s life.. As such, Penguin leads Sal and his men to the tunnels and underground tram system where Oz was able to send his product throughout the city undetected. However, Oz’s men turned off the lights and fought back, with Oz and Sal fighting inside one of the carts during the resulting shootout.
While Sal gets the upper hand, he surprisingly dies of a heart attack mid-fight.. As such, it’s a tragic and extremely anticlimactic way for one of Gotham’s biggest crime bosses to go out, although it will be fascinating to see how Oz Cobb responds to being effectively denied the opportunity to truly prove himself against Maroni. Regardless, Oz apparently deludes himself into thinking that he has actually defeated Salvatore Maroni, shooting the now-dead crime boss several times in the chest before taking his ring.
Although it may not be true, Oz chose to accept and maintain the narrative that he was in fact the victor, despite the truth that Sal died alone as a dark twist of fate.. To that end, it also reflects the newly revealed darkness of Oz’s childhood compared to everything he’s previously said about what happened to his brothers. Instead of “city taking them”Oz was the one who killed Jack and Benny, leaving them to die underground during a storm. As such, it appears that Penguin has once again created a false reality and truth with Salvatore’s death.
Why Sofia Falcone decides to blow up Oz’s drug operation
Tired of playing dad’s game
After talking to Francis Cobb and his niece Gia Viti who saw the mask in Sofia’s bag the night she gassed the Falcones, Sofia Gigante realizes she hasn’t done anything new since leaving Arkham. She’s still playing her father’s game, and the revelation of this is almost paralyzing for her, especially after she repeats Carmine’s own words to Gia, 10 years earlier, when Sofia suspected the truth about what happened to her mother. The former Sofia Falcone denied the dark truth of what she did to her family, in much the same way as Carmine.
To do this, Sofia decides to start a new game, much more brutal and focused on nothing more than pure revenge against Oz Cobb.. Wanting the Penguin to suffer, Sofia no longer cares about drugs, hence her decision to blow up the entire operation with the rigged car. Now the endgame is ready, with Sofia still holding Oz’s mother captive, having learned more about Oz’s childhood thanks to Doctor Rush, who spent some time working on Francis.
What to expect from Penguin’s final episode
The full truth will be revealed (and a final conflict)
With just one more episode of The Penguin go, Giant Sofia remains the last real obstacle in Oz’s path before he rises to the top of Gotham’s underworld.. That being said, Sofia isn’t going down without a fight. She also appears to be holding all her cards until the end of the The Penguin episode 7, having blown up Oz’s operations and taken his mother hostage.
“It seems likely that Sofia will reveal the truth about what happened with Jack and Benny to Francis, irreparably damaging what Oz holds most dear: his mother’s love…”
One can imagine that Oz probably has a few more tricks up his sleeve to gain the upper hand. That said, it seems likely that Sofia will reveal the truth about what happened with Jack and Benny to Francis, irreparably damaging what Oz holds most dear: his mother’s love. Either way, it will be very exciting to see what happens in this final episode of The Penguin is in the store.
