Origins episode 7 has a poignant meaning

However, not all is lost. Throughout the episode, Gibbs comes to better understand himself and value his life. He also becomes incredibly close to Franks, who supports him through his grief. Meanwhile, in the foreground of the episode, the NCIS: Origins cast solves a Jane Doe murder while Gibbs tends to an injured bird in his apartment. Gibbs’ bird bow may seem out of place in the grand scheme of things, but it’s fitting for what he’s going through.

As Gibbs argues on the phone about trying to return a pair of overdue crutches to the hospital, a bird flies into Gibbs’ apartment and is stunned, leaving him defenseless. Gibbs quickly begins to care for him, making a nest and giving him food and water. As Gibbs tends to the bird, Mark Harmon’s narration reveals that although he was alive, there were reminders all around him that he should be dead. The bird was just one example of this.

The bird’s injuries are comparable to Gibbs’s. Lost and alone, both Gibbs and the bird were limited by their injuries. and they both needed help to heal. For Gibbs, this was NCIS‘Mike Franks. Throughout episode 7, Franks tells Gibbs that he has come a long way. He saw firsthand what the pain did to Gibbs and helped him in every way he could, and now it was Gibbs’ turn to help the bird. The bird’s healing journey metaphorically represents Gibbs’s. When he is ready, he will fly away, no longer needing a crutch.

Losing Shannon and Kelly means Gibbs has no one left to care for. Not only did he lose his partner, but he also lost his baby. From the flashbacks in NCIS and NCIS: OriginsIt is clear that when Gibbs was not deployed, he was very involved in Shannon and Kelly’s lives. Losing them left a physical and emotional hole in her life.

The bird that fell into Gibbs’ apartment was a fluke. He could care for someone again, even if only briefly. The bird not only reflects Gibbs’ healing journey, but also shows that Gibbs’ appreciation for life and love has returned in NCIS: Origins. After months of pain and heartbreak, Gibbs was able to show love and affection for a new life and momentarily fill the void that his family’s tragedy caused him.
