Through Dexter: Original Sincharacters new and old, more details about the early days of Dexter Morgan's serial murder come to light as showing where he drew inspiration for certain aspects of his modus operandi. This includes some of the serial killers he has been influenced by or compared himself to, whether real or fictional.
In Dexter: Original Sin Season 1, Episode 1, Dexter is graduating from college while understanding that he can no longer suppress his Dark Passenger. At one point, while Dexter is taking graduation photos, he is told to think of something that makes him happy so he can smile. By doing this, Dexter imagines Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 horror novel American Psychowhich tells the fictional story of investment banker and serial killer Patrick Bateman. The reference is appropriate given Original sinDexter's story also begins in 1991, but also provides a deeper callback to Dexter's future crimes.

Original sin This is not the first time that Dexter Morgan has shown his affection for the serial killer character Patrick Bateman. On the Showtime original series Dexter used the name Patrick Bateman as an alias to purchase the M99. Dexter Season 1, Episode 6, “Return to Sender,” features a sequence in which Dexter explains having to open an account with a fictional doctor to purchase animal tranquilizer, specifically M99. Dexter noted that this medication could only be purchased under license from the DEA due to its strict control, so he falsified his purchase name as “Patrick Bateman, MD.”
Dexter would use the M99 throughout his murder career in Dexterof the original eight seasons. Dexter's typical murder process involves dressing in a specific outfit, wearing gloves, knocking out his victims by injecting them with M99, strapping them to a table with plastic wrap, slashing their cheeks with sheets of blood, and stabbing them in the heart with a knife. . Therefore, he needed careful access to large quantities of M99 to kill the victims he had intended for so many years.
However, Dexter was almost caught using the alias Patrick Bateman to buy M99 in Season 1. When the substance was found in the body of a woman killed by Dexter Morgan, Vince Masuka was given a list of people who were able to purchase M99 under a DEA license. Dexter was nervous that the alias would eventually be traced back to him, so he deleted the name from the list, keeping his M99 purchase safe without having any red flags raised about Patrick Bateman, MD of Miami Metro.

While Dexter used the alias Patrick Bateman specifically to purchase M99 in the original series, Showtime's Dexter: New Blood reconnected Dexter using M99 in their deaths. Instead of, New blood had Dexter use ketamine, a different tranquilizer, to subdue his victims. Not only that, but the program indicated that Dexter always used ketamine, not M99.
After New bloodthe retcon of Dexter's tranquilizing drug of choice, It is unclear whether the idea that he used the alias Patrick Bateman to purchase the M99 has also been erased.. It's possible this implies he used the alias to buy ketamine, but it certainly creates some continuity issues between the original Dexter and its derivative programs. Given Dexter's identity as the Butcher of Bay Harbor is exposed in Dexter: New Bloodis ending, the next one Dexter: Resurrection the sequel may clarify whether Patrick Bateman's use of the pseudonym is still canon.
