Harry purging Dexter from Laura Moser's files makes him even worse by lying to Dexter his entire life

Harry was trying to protect Dexter from the grim reality of his mother's death

Harry Morgan (Christian Slater) looks at a child's drawing on a refrigerator in Dexter: Original Sin, season 1, episode 4

Dexter: Original Sin episode 4 confirms that Harry never told Dexter the truth about what happened to his mother, Laura Moser. It might have been easier for Dexter to deal with his emotions, traumas, and violent impulses if he had found out sooner. However, this was not the case. In truth, Harry kept so many secrets from Dexter throughout his life in regards to Laura, he essentially made it nearly impossible for Dexter to figure it out on his own, which is even worse in comparison.

We know in the original series that Camilla ended up destroying Laura Moser's files, but it's even worse to see it all happen in Dexter: Original Sin. It's clear that Harry was trying to protect Dexter from the dark truth of his own past.. In Dexter's case, especially when he started acting out his Dark Passenger in the prequel series, hiding the truth from Dexter didn't seem to have a positive effect. Harry had the paternal instinct to bury him for Dexter's protection, but this contributed little to Dexter's personal development.

Why Harry Never Really Told Dexter the Truth About Laura's Death and the Container

He was probably worried that this would get Dexter out of his control

The most logical reason why Harry hid the truth about Laura Moser from Dexter is that he was worried it would have a negative effect on his psyche. Such a horrible act could alter Dexter's entire life and worldview.especially if he discovered it during his teenage years. Learning about Laura's horrific death as a teenager or college student would have consumed Dexter to the point where he would have had to take revenge, which would have completely sidetracked his life. As shown in Dexter: Original SinHarry leads Dexter into vigilantism with great effort, which could have been even more difficult if Dexter had known about his mother's real killers.

Dexter: Original Sin explores the origins of Dexter Morgan as he transitions from student to serial killer in 1991 Miami. Guided by his father, Dexter channels his dark desires through a moral code as he begins a forensic internship at the Miami Metropolitan Police Department.
