Lieutenant Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) injected himself with tardigrade DNA and enhanced himself to become the navigator of the USS Discovery’s spore drive. Unfortunately, after Scotty (James Doohan) sabotaged it, Starfleet also mothballed the transwarp drive. Trapped in the Delta Quadrant, the USS Voyager developed quantum steam technology to speed its journey home to Star Trek: Voyager. Ironically, Starfleet also decided to abandon spore drive technology in the 32nd century. Even though the USS Discovery was nearly a thousand years old when it arrived in 3189, Starfleet had no technology that could match Discovery’s spore drive. In fact, the Federation was fractured and isolated for almost a century after a disaster called the Burn destroyed the dilithium crystals on their starships and ended warp travel. With its ability to teleport using a spore drive, as well as a functional standard warp drive, USS Discovery became the backbone of 32nd century Starfleet and his primary weapon for mitigating crises threatening the Federation.

And yet, despite Commander Paul Stamets’ dream of replicating spore drives throughout 32nd Century Starfleet, the Federation went in a different direction. Possibly due to familiar problems with spore engines requiring navigators that could safely interact with the mycelial network. The Federation has decided that spore drives are inoperable.. Instead, the Federation developed a next-generation warp drive called the Pathway Drive, which was successfully tested on the USS Voyager-J and then installed throughout Starfleet. As the only starship equipped with a motion-activated spore drive, the USS Discovery remains unique in Starfleet at the end Star Trek: Discovery.
