Kirsten Vangsness reacts to the news that Matthew Gray Gubler is returning to Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 as Spencer Reid. Not having Spencer Reid as part of the cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution has been derailing the Paramount+ show for the past two seasons. Almost everyone from the CBS series returned for the revival, and considering how beloved Gubler is as Reid, there's understandable interest in when he'll appear. Fortunately, after years of waiting, it has now been confirmed that The BAU's golden boy will indeed return Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3.
In light of this development, Vangness took to his official Instagram account to comment on the news, republishing an article about Gubler's return. Although she did not include any comments, this not only confirms Reid's appearance in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3but also effectively expresses your enthusiasm about the subject. Check out her post below:
Why Reid's return is important for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3
Gubler has set his next big TV comeback
Prior to its release, it was already announced that Gubler would not be part of Criminal Minds: Evolution's returning roster. Unlike Daniel Henney, who has yet to return as Matt Simmons because of his commitment to Wheel of Time, there was initial confusion as to why the Reid actor wasn't around. There were reports that it was because he declined, but ultimately it was determined that his absence came down to scheduling conflicts. Gubler wanted to branch out and do something different after playing Reid for 15 seasons on the CBS series, supported by her co-workers.
That said, things are a little different this time around for Gubler's return in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3. The actor is set to lead his own CBS procedural, which is expected to launch next year. Considering the format and his revenue, this may be the last time he can participate in the Paramount+ version of his old show. Granted he won't be back full-time next year, seeing him in any role as Reid again is better than never seeing him in the role again.
Our Take on Gubler's Return as Reid in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3
Could be Reid's goodbye
Initially, the show was coy about the genie's whereabouts, with deputy director Bailey revealing he was working on something else. In Criminal Minds: Evolution in season 2, however, Emily Prentiss shared that Reid was actually on sabbatical. This made it seem like it was only a matter of time before he returned to the BAU. Either way, considering how much he suffered at work, taking time off was ideal.
Now, though, it's highly unlikely that Gubler's character will regain his place on Prentiss' team in Criminal Minds: Evolution. He could be a consultant from time to time, especially given his vast knowledge in profiling. If not, they may contact you if a case is linked to them. However, it is possible that his next appearance in Criminal Minds: Evolution season three will be its swan song.
