What happened in One Piece episode #1118?
Produced by Toei Animation; Directed by Kenichi Takeshita
in One piece Episode #1118, "The holy land in turmoil! Sai and Leo's full-power shock!" Sabo and Bonnie secured the keys for Kuma and the shackles of the other slavesBut they left to free them up to Karasu. For Bonnie, now that she knew her father would be safe, she left to Egghead to ask Vegapunk, and for Sabo, he decided to investigate a mysterious place called the Lost Chamber after some guards made it sound like something he should look into.
At Pangea Castle, Saint Charles followed his attempt to use Kuma to enslave Shirahoshi, with all the world leaders too afraid to go against a Celestial Dragon to help her. Fortunately, neither Leo nor he had the reservations, both of morals and rights to be pirates, and as such, Sei and Leo save Shirahoshi and beat Charlos so hard that his body is almost flattened into a pancake.. Everyone panicked at the thought of a celestial dragon being killed, and in the midst of all that, Morley arrived and took Kuma back to the revolutionaries.
While all this was happening, Cobra met with the five elders to discuss Nefertari Lily, the Nefertari who helped found the World Government, but mysteriously disappeared before she could return to Alabasta. The five elders claimed that they knew nothing, so Cobra decided to move on to another topic: a letter that Lily had written before her disappearance, which discussed, among other things, the will of D. Because in a big way, One piece Episode #1118 ended with Imu appearing and sitting on the empty throne in front of Cobra.
How the One Piece anime handled the question of Imu's gender
A big part of why episode #1118 received so much attention was because it would be the first time Imu would speak in the series, meaning it was an opportunity to finally reveal whether Imu is a man or a woman. however, One piece Episode #1118 avoided revealing Imu's gender by leaving their voice actor uncreditedAnd their voice was also brought in through a heavy filter. What could be gathered from their voice also sounded quite androgynous, so it is still impossible to make a definitive statement about Imu's gender.
As strange as it may be to go to such lengths to hide Imu's gender, it makes sense that the One piece Anime would do that. Even with the recent manga events, very little about Imu has been revealed, so the anime making a statement about their gender when the manga isn't yet would be a major spoiler. Because of this, One piece Episode #1118 Making it impossible to figure out Imu's gender by their voice actor helps maintain the ambiguity of their characterAnd overall, that's probably the best way to sell the idea.
One piece sells one of the biggest moments, despite a few shortcomings
From a visual standpoint, One piece Episode #1118 is not one of the anime's best efforts. Although there were many good shots from start to finish, especially when Se and Leo attacked Saint Charles, Way too many scenes in One piece Episode #1118 has poor pacing and lackluster artwork and direction. It was far from the anime's worst episode, but it was notably short of his last work and was somewhat difficult to watch because of it.
That said, episode #1118 succeeds in its biggest moment: Imu's appearance in front of Cobra. The camera work and overall direction in Imu's scene did a great job of dragging out Imu's appearance to emphasize how menacing they were supposed to be, like the accompanying soundtrack, and this led to One piece Episode #1118 perfectly selling Imu as a villain. This will certainly lead to even greater events in the One piece anime, and hopefully they'll have the direction they need to truly shine.
