One of Japan’s oldest and most beloved anime, Doraemon, gets its first premiere in half a decade

To mark the upcoming 45th anniversary of Doraemon film series in 2025, TV Asahi announced a new special opening sequence for the anime starting November 9, 2024. This tribute will feature memorable scenes from around Doraemon iconic film story, showing the adventures that have enchanted audiences for decades. The new opening will be “Yume wo Kanaete Doraemon” by Mao, a fan-favorite track and the third opening song of the current series. Regular viewers can expect multiple versions of this opening sequence, offering a new take on Doraemonthe beloved nostalgia of each episode.

Doraemon follows the story of a blue robotic cat from the 22nd century who travels through time to help a boy, Nobita Nobi, overcome life’s challenges and become a better person. Designed with an endless supply of gadgets stored in his “four-dimensional pocket,” Doraemon uses these futuristic tools to solve everyday problems, from school problems to personal dilemmas. The devices, often whimsical or fantastical, provide the backdrop for moral lessons and friendship-filled adventures, but Doraemon himself brings warmth, humor, and guidance to Nobita and his friends. As a result, Doraemon is one of Japan’s most beloved characters.

The series says goodbye to another celebratory song

The current opening theme, performed by Gen Hoshino, will have its final broadcast on November 2, 2024. Hoshino’s song debuted five years ago in October 2019, coinciding with Doraemon skip to Saturday’s “Anime Time” programming block next door Crayon Shin-chan. This was a significant change for Doraemonwhich has aired on Friday nights for 38 years, since 1981. With the coming change, Doraemon will be saying goodbye to a theme song that resonated with fans throughout its last chapter, setting the stage for a fitting tribute in time for the anniversary.

Since its manga debut in 1969 by the iconic duo Fujiko Fujio, Doraemon has inspired generations, leading to three television series, annual films, and numerous specials that continue to endear the character to fans around the world. The last anime series began in 2005 with an entirely new voice cast, ensuring Doraemon the story would remain fresh and inviting. As the anime approaches this milestone anniversary, the special opening sequence will serve as a celebration of all the joy Doraemon brought to the public over the years.
