The Mandalorian Has quite a bit to explain the rise to power of the First Order and Emperor Palpatine’s resurrection, but one small detail in season 2 secretly set the sequel trilogy even more effectively. The First Order was the main antagonist of the sequel trilogy of Star Wars movies, but the films only briefly touched on the group’s origins. instead, Star Wars shows how The Mandalorian have explored the origins of the First Order in detail, and explained that it grew directly from the Galactic Empire through the Imperial Remnant.

The Imperial Remnant went a long way in confirming the First Order, however The Mandalorian Accomplish much more than just that. The Mandalorian Season 3 brought the idea of Project Necromancer, the plan to resurrect Emperor Palpatine by producing a clone capable of retaining his essence, to the New Republic era of the Star Wars Timeline. The show is also indirectly responsible for the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, vi The Mandalorians popularity allowed Ahsoka To tell the story. While The Mandalorian Put the first order very commendably, there is one easy to miss detail that makes the explanations even better.

Moff Gideon's Arquitens-class cruiser in The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 8

In the finale of The Mandalorian Season 2, Din Djarin and his allies board Moff Gideon’s ship to rescue Grogu. Interestingly, although Gideon was one of the Imperial Remnant’s most prolific officers, he was not in command of a Star Destroyer, but rather the much smaller one. Arquitens– Class light cruiser. Beaumont Cain, an in-universe historian, noted that Gideon was not alone in commanding such a small ship, most of the Imperial Remnant active in the galaxy at the time did the same. Keane explains further in Chris Kempshall’s “Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire.”

What is interesting when you look at the forces of the Imperial remnant that exist on the edges of New Republic space in the lead up to Grand Admiral Throne’s return, is the scarcity of larger capital ships… where all the remaining star destroyers and Other tools missing?

Fortunately, Kin also offered an answer to the question of where the Star Destroyers were during The Mandalorian: They are used as the foundation of the first order.

The star destroyers are sent to the unknown regions

After the Empire’s defeat at the Battle of Jakku in 5 Abyss (after the Battle of Yavin), a group of Imperial leaders fled to the Unknown Regions of the Empire. Star Wars Galaxy map. They chose the Unknown Regions specifically because they knew they wouldn’t be followed there, and because they knew they could hide in the area until they built up enough strength to return to the galaxy.. Part of the reason the Unknown Regions were so secluded, however, was because no one really knew what was in them.

Beamont Cain suggested that something dangerous was brewing in the area, and that the Imperial Remnant kept their star destroyers there to protect against such threats.

We have to wonder if perhaps when the founders of the First Order fled the known galaxy, they took the bulk of their surviving military equipment with them. It wouldn’t be enough to recover the galaxy with, but it might help them stay alive long enough to one day make their return.

With the Star Destroyers to keep them safe and the threat of the Unknown Regions to keep them hidden, the Imperial Remnant has been able to build its power for decades. Keeping the Star Destroyers in the Unknown Regions probably also allowed the Remnant to establish a power base in the region, one that would eventually grow until it became the First Order.. so, The Mandalorian Subtly explains exactly how the Imperial Remnant is able to operate on a small scale in the charted regions of the galaxy while keeping the scope of its forces hidden.

The subtlety of Moff Gideon Arquitens-Class Cruiser highlights two of the best things about Star Wars. When a new story leaves a question unanswered, such as how the sequel trilogy didn’t fully explain how the First Order came to be, it’s almost guaranteed that another Star Wars History will answer it at some point in the future. Additionally, Gideon’s ship is a great example of how endlessly detailed the franchise is. Something as simple as the size of a villain’s ship can become a very important piece of lore, a fact The Mandalorian proved handy.

The series follows the travels of a lone gunfighter named Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. Acting as the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian became incredibly popular on Disney+, in part due to Mando’s relationship with Grogu, who the internet dubbed “Baby Yoda” upon his introduction in season 1.
