Once Human: Winter’s Way

Once human entered a new scenario: Winter Path and other new ways to stay warm in extreme cold. Along with the new setting comes new territory, new content and new game mechanics. In addition to being able to explore new areas and dive even deeper into the Once human story, players will also have to discover the game’s new mechanics, which include extreme temperatures.

Like other survival games, Once human finally introduced the mechanics of cold and heat. This mechanic can affect players in different ways. For example, staying in the cold for a long time can cause hypothermiawhich, if left untreated, can completely deplete the player’s health in a matter of seconds. The result? Fatality. This leaves the question: how do players survive these freezing temperatures?

New temperature mechanics and what they mean

Temperature States and What They Do

Player status and temperature screen on once human

In Phase 1 of the new Once Human: Path of Winter scenario, players can choose between two areas as starting points: Vena Fjord and Onyx Tundra. Personally, I opted for the Onyx Tundra. Although I’m not a new player, I wanted to start slowly in this scenario and not jump head first into more difficult battles. Where you choose to land is up to you. Ultimately, this doesn’t matter, as you’ll be able to explore both regions soon.

Regardless of the area you land and build in, you will face the same problems as other players: extreme temperatures. In this case, extreme cold. Unfortunately, the cold can have devastating effects, causing you to lose energy and health. There are five temperature states in the Winter Patheach with its own effect.

Temperature state

Temperature effect

Frost

Rapid loss of energy and body temperature, eventually leading to hypothermia. When Hypothermia worsens, it inflicts one application of Freeze every three seconds. Frozen causes a 5% HP drop per second and movement is drastically slower. After four stacks, the player dies instantly.

Cold

Rapid loss of energy, gradual loss of body temperature. Possible hypothermia.

Cozy

Body temperature returns to normal.

Warm

Rapid loss of hydration, gradual increase in body temperature. Possible heatstroke.

Flame

Rapid loss of hydration and increase in body temperature. Heatstroke gets worse. By worsening Heatstroke, it inflicts a stack of Combustion every three seconds. Combustion causes a 5% HP drop per second. After four stacks, the player dies instantly.

Cozy is where you should aim to be. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to reach and maintain a comfortable body temperature. If you plan to play Winter Pathyou must prepare to combat these extreme temperatures.

Best Methods to Stay Warm During Winter

Stay warm to avoid hypothermia and instant death

Player mining in the once-human winter

Getting hypothermia Once Human: Path of Winter It’s frustrating. If you’re struggling to stay warm, you’re not alone. Fortunately, there are several ways to stay warm while exploring Vena Fjord and the Onyx Tundra.

Keep an eye on the time

From dusk to dawn, you can expect the cold temperatures of Vena Fjord and Onyx Tundra to be more unforgiving. So this means anywhere from 8pm to 8am, It’s time to enter. Unless, of course, you are good at cold-resistant items.

Even so, it is better to be careful, as these items do not guarantee your safety. Mostly, they help you buy time so you don’t get so cold so quickly. Keep an eye on the clock at the top and time your exploration well.

Return home or build fires to survive

Your home is your refuge. Although it will not completely cure the effects of the cold, it will prevent your health from depleting. However, you may still get cold; if you are cold, traveling the next day can immediately send you into a state of hypothermia. To help with this, keep a fire nearby or build temperature control facilities, which will be unlocked in Phase 2. Keep a good supply of fuel on hand, as you will need it to feed the fire.

Also, if you are caught outside when night falls and you feel cold, build a fire. The fire pit has the same effects as your home and will protect you from the extremes of hypothermia. While you can transport yourself home, building a campfire will allow you to continue your journey where you left off the next day.

Get ready with different skins and tools

In Once Human: Path of Winter, killing and skinning different animals will result in different skins. If you start in the Onyx Tundra area, your best bet is to hunt deer, seals, and polar bears. You can hunt bears and mutant flamingos if you get to Vena Fjord. Make sure to unlock the Leather Memetics in your Memetics.

Be careful when entering the water. Water will grant or inflict the Dampened state, which increases your Heat Resistance but decreases your Cold Resistance.

Each animal will produce fur that you can craft into cold-resistant armor in addition to the armor you already have. The animals from the Onyx Tundra will help you at first, but the animal pelts from the Vena Fjord will be more beneficial later on. You can also find weapon and armor mods to improve your cold resistance.

Keep the right tools in your backpack

THE Winter Path There are some new and old tools to help you survive the cold. You can create and transport a torch to give you warmth. You will need to withdraw it to get the benefits. Other tools that can help include Thermoium and heatium – make sure you unlock the Polar Expedition Memetic first.

THE Chaosium Lantern It’s another tool you’ll want in your backpack. The Chaosium Lantern requires Chaosium to function and uses it quickly, so keep a good supply of it. You can find Chaosium by looting enemies or placing it in the furnace. The good thing about the flashlight is that it can increase and decrease body temperature.

Finally, be sure to prepare foods that increase resistance to cold. Some new cultures and meals are introduced in Once Human: Path of Winter. Spikemato, Sunny Ginger, and Polar Peppers are new crops that grant +5 cold resistance when consumed. Turning them into dishes, such as Savory Baked Spikemato, will increase their effect and allow you to survive the cold for longer periods.
