While one of the former stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is embarking on James Gunn’s DC Universe, the Creature Commands actor is candid about different experiences. While 2025 ushers in the DC Universe’s cinematic era, fans will get a taste of the franchise through Creature Commands when it debuts on Max Many actors have already joined the franchise, and for some of them, Gunn’s DC Universe is another attempt at the superhero genre, with a handful of MCU actors also coming for its reboot.
Screen speech I recently interviewed Frank Grillo for Creature Commands TV show, where he was also asked about his opinion on being part of two major superhero franchises such as the DC Universe and the MCU. When answering the question about what has been the most rewarding aspect of jumping between live-action and animation for DC Studios, Grillo highlighted that it is being able to be part of the process from the beginning, stating the following:
Frank Grillo: It’s just being really involved in such a good way from the beginning, so I have a chance to be in the embryonic stages of this on a grand scale, and not just used as a plot device and then avoided. So in that, you can’t do it without Rick Flag Sr., the way James set it up, and that’s really, to me, important, and I’m grateful for that. I take this very seriously. I tell James and Peter this all the time, whatever you guys have planned, I’m in.
Even though Rick Flag Sr. may be a lesser-known DC character compared to Marvel’s Crossbones, It’s clear that Grillo is feeling more satisfied with his role in Gunn’s DC Universe. Despite having an important role Captain America: The Winter Soldierthe MCU quickly got rid of the character Captain America: Civil Warlimiting the significance he could have in his overarching story. With DC Universe, Grillo can bounce between DC Universe films and TV shows, both live-action and animated, starting with leading the Creature Commands cast.
Although Grillo voiced Crossbones through Marvel Studios, And if…?, the character never got the chance to shine properly in the MCU. Fortunately, from what is known about Grillo’s role in the DC Universe, Gunn is letting Flag Sr. be a more extensive and developed character with a detailed storyline, which includes appearing in Peacemaker Season 2 next year too.
Given that Grillo’s DC Universe character is leading the way for the franchise with a pivotal role in its first outing, his excitement about playing the role makes sense. Although DC Universe Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” hasn’t even started yet, Grillo is already slated to appear in not one, but three DC Universe projects in 2025, which includes the Superman filmgiving Flag Sr. plenty to do in the reboot. As Creature Commands will kick off Flag Sr.’s saga in the DC Universe, it will be exciting to see how his arc progresses in his other future appearances.
Creature Commandos is an animated television series that follows a team of supernatural beings, including a werewolf, a vampire and a gorgon, brought together by the government for high-risk missions. This unique group faces numerous challenges as it leverages its distinct capabilities to combat threats. The show offers a mix of action, horror and dark humor, set in a universe where classic monsters are reinvented as heroes.
