Nightwing and Red Hood’s relationship is more complicated than most comics admit
Nightwing #119 by Bruce Jones, Joe Dodd, Bit, Javier RodrÃguez and Travis Lanham
The relationship between Nightwing and Red Hood has been difficult most of the time. In most interpretations of the story, Dick was fired from the role of Robin, resulting in him changing and becoming Nightwing. But Robin’s mantle didn’t stay empty for long, as Batman quickly recruited Jason Todd for the role, leaving both characters with complicated feelings. Dick didn’t feel good about being replaced, and Jason struggled to follow the example Dick had set. Although they eventually accept each other, their relationship also becomes more complicated over time.
At one point, DC even positioned Jason as Dick’s personal Joker.
After Jason Todd’s death at the hands of the Joker, he returns to life darker than ever as the Red Hood. Instead of being the smart, cheerful boy he was as Robin, he was now vengeful and full of hate. Jason wanted nothing more than to eradicate crime and punish the Bat-Family, resulting in Jason and Dick fighting several times over the years. At one point, DC even positioned Jason as Dick’s personal Joker. After seeing the boy he adored turn into a monster determined to kill him, it’s no wonder Dick wished Jason had stayed dead.
Red Hood would never forgive Nightwing for wishing he had stayed dead
And who would blame him?
Jason Todd’s character has changed a lot in the DC Universe. He was a hero, a villain and an antihero. During some of their darkest stories, he was one of the most dangerous villains the Bat-Family could face. He went after Dick Grayson, Damian Wayne and Tim Drake. No one was safe from his anger. Although it is unforgivable that Nightwing would wish the death of the person he once considered a brother is also, unfortunately, completely understandable considering how dangerous and demented Red Hood had become.
