Night Court Star John Larroquette Reflects on Season 2’s “Perfect” Tribute to Original Star and Future Callbacks to Past Characters

Night Court star John Larroquette reflected on season two”perfect“tribute to an original star of the show and future callbacks to past characters. The ongoing revival of the 1980s sitcom sees Larroquette return as Dan Fielding, now a former assistant district attorney and current public defender. He joins Abby Stone ( Melissa Rauch), daughter of Harry Stone (Harry Anderson), who surpassed the court as a judge, with the revival making many references to the original series. Night Court season three is expected to begin on the day this article was written, so more Easter eggs are undoubtedly on the horizon.

Talking to TV insider, Larroquette reflected on Night Court 2nd season”perfect“tribute to Christine Sullivan of the original Markie Postfeaturing Gigi Rice as his sister, Katie. The actor commented on how the pair previously played sisters in the 2019 TV movie Christmas reservationsand his own work with Rice in the 1990s in The John Larroquette Program. He said these past roles for the actor made his look perfect, and something he hopes future seasons can replicate with their own homages. Check out what Larroquette had to say below:

I think having Gigi Rice play Markie’s sister, Christine Sullivan, was a great idea. And actually, in the past, Gigi Rice and Markie Post played sisters in a television movie they made. And I loved Gigi because Gigi and I worked together on The John Larroquette Show. It was a natural choice to address the relationship between Fielding and Christine Sullivan and what happened after it was over. It was perfect. Certainly, when these opportunities arise, we will approach them with a caring heart and love, and hopefully, we will be able to do them again.

What Larroquette’s Praise Means for Future Night Court Tributes

The actor hopes for more references to the past

In addition to Larroquette’s return and Abby being Harry’s daughter, the cast of Night Court also contains other references to the original series. Different characters have similar roles to their original counterpartsas Olivia (India de Beaufort) taking over as assistant district attorney, and Grugs (Lacretta) taking over as Bull’s (Richard Moll) bailiff. The series also constantly acknowledges that the events of the original took place, ensuring awareness of its past without always directly emphasizing every aspect of its previous installment.

By having Rice play Christine’s sister, the series emphasizes his past more directly, bringing in a character who has direct links to others in the series. While it’s unclear to what extent season three will take a similar approach, the show will contain a The Big Bang Theory reunion between Rauch and Mayim Bailik, who played Amy in the previous sitcom. The show not only acknowledges its own past, but also the pasts of its stars, making it the perfect platform to pay homage to all the comedic stories that led to the revival – directly connected or not.

Our Take on Larroquette’s Praise for Night Court’s Tribute to the Past

There are likely to be more in the future

Although there have already been references to the original, and now a very direct homage to the past, it is likely that Night Court will contain even more surprises in the third season. While it’s unclear how many direct references to the original will be in upcoming episodes, something similar to Rice’s appearance seems likely now that the show has successfully tested it. Perhaps this will include more relatives of original characters, honoring the legacies of those who came before.
