After two long years of waiting for good news, December will be an exceptionally exciting month for CC fans. DC has come under significant pressure in recent years as its answer to the MCU, the DCEU, struggles to keep up with its rival film franchise. While that’s not to say that the DCEU wasn’t full of big wins, including excellent casting decisions and incredible action sequences, several underperforming critical and financial losses culminated in the death knell of the franchise that was Black Adamafter which it was announced that the DCEU would come to an end.
Fortunately, around this time two years ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the newly appointed co-CEOs of DC Studios, announced the reboot of DC Universe. While the exciting announcement was bittersweet following the revelation that Henry Cavill and his Justice League co-stars would not be reprising their roles, it signified a new dawn for DC films with the dependable James Gunn at the helm. After a year of delay since the last DCEU film, this exciting new direction will finally begin to be revealed next month.
James Gunn’s Superman Movie Trailer Releases
Reports suggest the trailer will arrive sometime in December
Superman is the first live-action film to launch the new DCU and is set for release on July 11th. This will take place a year after filming ends, suggesting that Gunn and his DC colleagues are eager for the DCU’s flagship film to be as polished as possible. Since Superman was announced in early 2023 as Superman: Legacyfans were given images and information to find out what to expect from the latest iteration of Superman with David Corenswet on the cover. Yet December will reportedly give DC fans a more detailed look than ever before.
According to a report from Collider, the first trailer for James Gunn Superman is expected in mid-December. This should kick off the hype, as it comprises the first official look at the new direction being taken by the DCU. While setting photos Superman has been a cause for concern for some, the trailer will be the first time that would-be viewers will be able to familiarize themselves with the film’s aesthetic and plot – sparking several months of excitement and further speculation ahead of its release.
DC Universe officially launches with Creature Commandos
Creature Commandos is part of the official DCU Canon
Creature Commands should be released on December 5th as the first official release within the DCU. It follows yet another team of super-powered criminals under the supervision of Amanda Waller, except this team comprises a series of non-human misfits (according to Waller). The premise is familiar to Gunn, who directed The Suicide Squad, one of the DCEU’s most acclaimed installments, which is a promising sign of its quality.
While Superman will be the first live-action film in the DCU, Creature Commands will launch the franchise in earnest. In a move off track from DC Studios, certain animations that don’t fall under DC’s Elseworlds banner will be part of the DCU’s mainline continuity. This means that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will play the exact same character in the animated and live-action offerings of the UDC. Anyone who is truly invested in the future of this reboot should probably consider capturing Creature Commands.
