Warning: Contains spoilers for Suffering #1-4! Chip has been a critically acclaimed and fan-favorite comic series from Image Comics since the franchise was first brought to life by Todd McFarlane in the '90s, and since then, it has grown into something so much bigger than just a single series. Chip isn't just a badass indie comic anymore, it's now an established universe with a number of spin-off series that all feed into the larger continuity. And the last one Chip Universe Comic series stars a character who was a mainstay in Chip Learn from the beginning: Sian Fitzgerald.
unhappiness #1-4 by Todd McFarlane and Szymon Kudranski is the latest Chip Spin-off series, although Spawn (or any variation of Spawn) is not the main character. Instead, the honor goes to Cyan Fitzgerald, who ventures down a dark path to uncover the truth behind the death of her mother, Wanda, all while being hunted by demons and learning more about her supernatural abilities. The abilities include Telekinesis, teleportation, invisibility/phasing, and the power to make people feel the pain they've caused others just by touching them - with the terrible side effect of feeling that pain along with them through mental/empathic connection.
Suffering is a rough and grounded story that he throws at the reader The world of ChipBut without the fantastic elements of demons, angels and badass action sequences of all sorts. Suffering replaces all these things with a deep dive into the worst of what humanity has to offer, all through the eyes of a traumatized teenage girl. And the most disturbing part of the miniseries is that it does not have an end.
There is no compunction for those who commit atrocious acts, and no closure for Sian. Suffering is only a peak in her life and nothing more, which makes the series that much more hard-hitting and bleak. Misery leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to Sian's personal story, making readers want to learn as much about her as they can. good luck to them Chip Has been shaping Cyan's history for decades.
Cyan Fitzgerald's debut and connection to Spawn
Cian has been wrapped up in Spawn's Hellish Adventures since the beginning
Cyan Fitzgerald is the daughter of Wanda Blake and Terry Fitzgerald, who made her debut as a toddler in Chip #3. Wanda was married to Al Simmons (aka Spawn) before Al's death, but she got remarried with Al's best friend, Terry, after the two found comfort in each other while mourning Al. During their marriage, Wanda and Al tried to have children, but could not. So, when Al returned as Spawn, he regarded Sian as something of a surrogate daughter, eager to protect her as if she were his own.
Cyan and Spawn wouldn't form a strong personal bond until then Chip #51, when Cyan finds the shoe that Spawn used as a stitch to hold his face together (a wound that was actually inflicted by Batman during a previous crossover). Sian became attached to the shoe, tied it to her old shoe and wore it as a necklace. When someone tried to take it, or in one case when it flew out the car window, Sian wondered until it came back.
The shoe is also how Spawn is able to track down Sian after she is kidnapped by the Violator Chip #60, as there was a piece of him that Sian formed an almost spiritual connection to. When Spawn found Cyan in the Violator's clutches, he unleashed a full-power Necroplasm attack and obliterated the Violator. Some ofAt-Eastof soon 1000000000000000 her soul is her soul.Innocent no more... now tainted by his curse". Sian was exposed to a supernatural substance brewed in hell, and after that moment, Sian starts to exhibit powers himself.
When Sian starts exhibiting powers and introduces her alter ego: Misery
Cyan Fitzgerald comes into her powers slowly and with a lot of pain
The stressor that sparked Cyan's supernatural abilities was the death of her mother, Wanda, who met her end in Spawn: Resurrection. The trauma of losing her mother drove Sian to prescription drugs, and she quickly developed a pill addiction. To help her recover, Sean's father, Terry, puts her in rehab. When Spawn went to visit her in Chip #269, Sian's powers were put on full display, as she teleported both out of the facility and into Spawn's apartment.
Cyan's newfound powers are further explored over the next few issues, culminating with the introduction of her alter ego in Chip #275: Disaster. The demonic powers Cian was exhibiting manifested in his own personality, one that takes over Cian's body when the situation becomes too difficult for Cian to bear. Unfortunately, Sian developing these powers puts a target on her back. Angels and demons were after her, partly to get to Spawn, but also because they wanted to learn and observe Sian himself.
When Sian did a kind of 'study abroad' program in Japan, her powers continued to strengthen, and even allowed her to see spirits that were invisible to everyone else. Previously, Sian was captured by an organization that was using the blood of a demon to create a drug meant to control the minds of humans, and they made her a test subject. While you escape in Chip #282, Sian takes a dose of the demon blood medicine, which fully unlocks her powers.
After that moment, Cyan can do anything readers see her do in Misery, including and especially her ability to make others feel the pain of their own sins, which she uses to slay a literal demon and save Spawn's life.
Cyan Fitzgerald's alt-future counterpart proves she's destined for greatness
Spawn/WildC.ATS By Alan Moore and Scott Clark
As mentioned earlier, misery did not have an end. It was a slice of Sean's life that showed her still reeling from her mother's death, still struggling with addiction and the fallout from her time in that rehab facility, and still trying to understand her powers. Suffering opened the door for future storylines starring Sian, which is something that Chip Fans should be excited about, as one story already proved that Sian is destined for greatness: Spawn/WildC.ATS
in Spawn/WildC.ATSReaders are shown a future where Spawn is corrupted by an otherworldly amulet and becomes the demonic dictator, Ipsissimus. In this timeline, Cyan becomes the new Zealot after joining the WildC.ATS Cyan travels back in time to the '90s to kill the spawn of the 'present day' and eliminate the existence of Ipsissimus. But, instead, the WildC.ATS recruits him to fight Ipsissimus in the future, only to realize that by doing so, they are ensuring Ipsissimus' creation.
Today's spawn was exposed to the corruption of the amulet, and the only thing that got him to kill Ipsisimus's creation was the revelation that Zeal is actually Zion. The sight of a grown Cian as a member of the Wildc.ats desperate to stop him is enough to stop Spawn from the ever beautiful Ipsissimus, meaning Cian effectively saved the entire world.

Even in an alternate future, Sian is a badass destined for greatness—a level of greatness she's well on her way to achieving in the main Spawn Universe. Indeed, Sian Fitzgerald's personal history is extensive, and the release of Misery only adds to her broader history, as it does to the overall one Chip continuity.
