The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim broke a box office record for the Peter Jackson-produced film franchise during its opening weekend. The new film is the first animated feature in the Oscar-winning series. Lord of the Rings franchise, which adapts the works of JRR Tolkien and began in 2001 with the first of SDA trilogy and now includes the Hobbit film trilogy, as well as the next The Hunt for Gollum. Rohirrim takes place almost two centuries before the events of SDAfollowing the exploits of one of the kings of Rohan.
Put Deadlinefrom Saturday morning, The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim is projected to earn a $5 million 3-day opening weekend at the national box office. This is a dramatic step up from the live-action films in the Peter Jackson franchise, some of which are among the highest-grossing films of all time. The previous lowest debut was The Fellowship of the Ring$47.2 million, which still came in at more than 9 times the debut of the new animated film.
