New Hunger Games movie should avoid revealing District 12's biggest missing character

Suzanne Collins' next book in The Hunger Games franchise, Sunrise at Harvestgo will take place during the Second Quarter Massacre, when many familiar characters were teenagers, including one who has yet to be seen. The film series began in 2012, when Lionsgate adapted Collins' first novel for the big screen, and soon took the world by storm. More than a decade later, Collins wrote five Hunger Games books, all of which have been or will be adapted into films.

Sunrise at Harvest (the book) will be released on March 18, 2025, while The Hunger Games: Harvest Sunrise (the film adaptation) is scheduled to premiere on November 20, 2026.

As mentioned above, Collins' next venture, Sunrise at Harvestrevolves around the events of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The story is told from the point of view of Haymitch Abernathy, as he is one of the four tributes from District 12 in the book. Yes, the 50th Hunger Games have twice as many honors. It takes place in a Quarter Quell, which means it must have a “special occasion” theme. However, Haymitch isn't the only familiar character living in District 12 at that time, which means a few others may appear.

The Problem With Sunrise On The Reaping Featuring Katniss Everdeen's Father in The Hunger Games

Everdeen is alive during the 50th Hunger Games

Katniss Everdeen's parents are around Haymitch's age in Sunrise at Harvest, which means they can be part of the story. Although Mrs. Everdeen is in the original trilogy, Mr. Everdeen never appears. He died in a coal mine explosion a few years before Katniss volunteered for Prim to harvest District 12 for the 74th Hunger Games. Then, the audience heard Katniss talk about her father. However, he's never been a full-fledged character in any book or film, and that's not likely to change anytime soon. Sunrise at Harvest.

Katniss's father was someone she idolized as he taught her almost everything she knew, making him almost a mythical figure to readers/viewers. Consequently, it will be difficult for the real version of Mr. Everdeen to live up to everyone's vision of him. The Hunger Games shouldn't ruin her character, and the franchise can do that by avoiding introducing Katniss' father in Sunrise at Harvest.

How The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping Could Include Katniss' Father

Sunrise On The Reaping Will Likely Feature Younger Versions Of Many Familiar Characters

Given that Mr. Everdeen is a teenager during the Quaternary Massacre, he should be in the crowd when Haymitch is chosen to represent District 12 at the reaping. Then, Sunrise at Harvest could feature Katniss's father making a cameo. His mother will likely be a minor character in the prequel, as she was close to one of the District 12 tributes, Maysilee Donner. However, Mr. Everdeen doesn't need to have a big role. The next Hunger Games the film could simply show Katniss' father at the harvest as a nod to viewers and to remind them of his existence.
