Japan's most-read manga list features old and new entries
A new generation of manga is slowly joining other long-running series
To the surprise of what is probably a very small number of anime and manga fans, One piece was the most read series of 2024. Despite a somewhat irregular release schedule in the second half of the year, the industry titan has shown no signs of slowing down and is seemingly unable to lose its well-deserved popularity. Jujutsu Kaisen had another incredibly successful year, finishing in second place due in large part to the conclusion of the manga and the general praise of the series.
Oshi no Ko scored surprisingly high on the list, coming in fourth place after ending its serialization in 2024. The manga's ending was incredibly controversial, which may have caused readers to flock to the series. The biggest increase, however, was Frierenwhich ended right behind Oshi no Ko in the report. The series enjoyed a huge boom in popularity during the airing of its anime adaptation earlier in the year, and remains one of the most popular series months after the show's conclusion.
Popular anime adaptations have caused many increases in readership series
Frieren wasn't the only series to receive a huge increase in readership following its anime adaptation. Demon SlayerThe ongoing TV series has kept the manga incredibly popular, despite it ceasing publication in May 2020. Kaiju #8 reached the top 20 after its own new adaptation, receiving praise from fans and critics alike. Surprisingly, My Hero Academy it barely managed to crack the top 10 readership charts despite all the attention surrounding its conclusion and the ongoing anime. The most impressive entry, however, has to be Dandadanwhich ended the year just placing in the top 20.
The manga, while relatively popular in its own right, has never attracted the readership of many of the other major series in recent years. However, its anime adaptation only began airing in October 2024. brought a new level of popularity to mangaand gave its readers a considerable shock. 2024 has been a year of ups and downs in the world of manga, although both old and new series have enjoyed huge success. The report is predictably full of Shōnen Jump titles, but it seems like a new era of manga is eager to compete with the old guard.
