It's been three years since Song Kang and Han So-hee's K-drama, However has been released, and this new romantic J-drama from Netflix is perfect to watch if you missed the original show. Directed by Kim Ga-ram and based on the webtoon of the same name by Jung Seo, However sees Yoo Na-bi and Park Jae-eon falling in love despite being skeptical about romantic relationships. The 10-episode romantic K-drama is one of Song Kang and Han So-Hee's best shows and has been praised for how the plot is not the typical plot that audiences have come to expect from shows of the genre.
Given However's success and popularity, a second season would be expected. However, the K-drama did not get a second season. Instead, a Japanese remake of Na-bi and Jae-eon's romance was created. The drama J, However: the forms of love, follows the same plot as the original K-drama and manages to capture the intense love story between its two main protagonists.
However: The Shapes Of Love Is A Reminder To Watch The 2021 K-Drama Nevertheless
However: The Shapes Of Love stars Ryusei Yokohama and Sara Minami
The release of However: the forms of love is a great reminder to go back and watch the original K-drama. Similar to J-drama, However covers the complexities of Jae-eon and Na-bi's romance as it goes along. J.ae-eon struggles with commitment and is sometimes toxicbut it is these characteristics that make him a captivating protagonist. Na-bi, on the other hand, has just ended her disastrous relationship, so she's not really in a position to fall in love with someone like Jae-eon, but his attraction to her makes her ignore her instincts.
As the J-drama is a retelling of Na-bi and Jae-eon's intense relationship, the series doesn't change much from the original story. However, However: the forms of love has a shorter run time, with only eight episodes, compared to K-drama which has 10 episodes over an hour longg. The J-drama features elements that made Song Kang and Han So-hee's version so popular, but the Japanese remake has a slightly different tone and aesthetic. Plus, Ryusei Yokohama and Sara Minami are just as good as Song Kang and Han So-hee.
Still: The Shapes Of Love is good, but you should also watch the original show
Jae-eon and Na-bi don't have a typical love story
While However: the forms of love It's great, the original K-drama is still worth watching, especially since it can be argued that Song Kang and Han So-hee's story is better than the Japanese remake. The two shows' stories are obviously similar, but there's something great about watching Howevermainly because it offers a first look at the main protagonist's romance and its evolution.
However doesn't have the tropes that make romantic K-dramas so popularlike the enemies-to-lovers story, the rich boy falls in love with a poor girl format, or the workplace romance. Instead of, However is a nuanced depiction of two characters who fall in love, despite the male lead being hesitant to fully commit. In some ways, K-drama is closer to reality than any other show of its kind because it doesn't have the fairytale love story that is typically expected in romance novels.
However, it is one of the best K-dramas of Song Kang and Han So-hee's career.
