NCIS continues its strong run on CBS, with two shows from the franchise set to return in 2025. NCIS series revolves around the lives of special agents of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, with the characters originally introduced in an episode of NOTCH. Premiering in September 2003 on CBS, the procedural became the network’s flagship show. Now in season, it is the third longest-running US primetime scripted live-action program currently airing on television. The original show spawned six spinoffs, including the prequel NCIS: Originsand NCIS: Sydney which debuted in 2022.
A press release from Paramount Press Express revealed that the franchise is expected to return to CBS in 2025, with NCIS season 22 with mid-season return on Monday, January 27, 2025 from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm. NCIS: Origins also returns the same night and will air shortly after NCIS. About that, NCIS: Sydney Season 2 will premiere on Friday, January 31stin the 8pm-9pm slot following the conclusion of Season 1 in December 2023.
What this news means for the NCIS franchise
The programs continue to win over audiences
Even now that the original show is more than two decades old, the NCIS franchise shows no signs of slowing downor losing popularity, with the most recent seasons still averaging over 10 million viewers. NCIS Season 22 appears to have the franchise back into long-form storytelling after Season 21 was truncated (10 episodes) as a result of the SAG-AFTRA attacks, and that should bode well for how the season plays out. NCIS: Origins also got off to a strong start in its debut year and its ratings will likely be helped by airing after the main show.
The franchise may be one of the most ubiquitous on primetime television, but it feels like a procedural that will keep happening no matter what.
As for NCIS: Sydney In Season 2, the show will pick up after a cliffhanger ending in Season 1, and the premiere could very well begin with Utkin’s death, as well as explore Colonel Rankin’s revelation in more depth. NCIS Sydney was well received in Australia, and the show will return to Paramount+ in the new yearhoping to come close to emulating the 14-season run of NCIS: Los Angeles.
Our verdict on whether the NCIS franchise has run its course
There’s still life in the series
The franchise may be one of the most ubiquitous on primetime television, but it feels like a procedural that will keep happening no matter what. While NCIS: Sydney is in a more precarious position and will need to work harder to maintain longevity due to its specific location, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see the original NCIS reach the 30th season. While this is unlikely, as long as there is still an audience for compelling procedurals with fun characters, NCIS will continue to prosper.
