Murder In A Small Town’s ending has the perfect argument for why it needs a second season

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Murder In A Small Town season 1, episode 8.In addition to bringing a killer to justice and tying up some loose ends, the season finale of Murder in a small town opened the door for a character to flourish if Fox renews the mystery for a second season. THE Murder in a small town The ending (“Sleep While I Sing”) is based on the impetus of a serial killer loose in the coastal town and reveals that the professor, Tommy Cummins (Noah Reid) is the culprit. After Karl Alberg’s (Rossif Sutherland) breakthrough discovery, he arrives just in time to save Devon (Alisha Newton) and bring Tommy to the bar.

After the art teacher is arrested, former lovers Karl and Cassandra “Cass” Lee (Kristin Kreuk) talk and discuss their new aspirations. Afterwards, the rocky lovers seem to agree that they deserve a second chance at romance, and the screen fades to black. While this is a perfect place to potentially end the series, Murder in a small town sparked a new story that would make a second season immensely more interesting.

Local librarian Cass started out as a generic love interest, but, after her traumatic kidnapping in Murder in a small town episode 5, her character turned a new leaf. The second half of the season showed Cassandra being grief-stricken by her experience, even leading her to break off the tentative relationship between her and Karl. Murder in a small town episode 8 reveals how far Cassandra has come, with the Gibson native telling Karl she has plans to run for city council. Additionally, his new role would include supervising the police.

With a little help from Roger Galbraith (Lucas Bryant), Cassandra realizes she can follow a love story despite your reservations and fears. Cass maintaining her position of authority can lead to interesting power dynamics during cases. She and Karl may have disagreements professionally or Cassandra may be caught between her beliefs and her work.

If Cassandra gets that spot on the city council for police oversight, the entire Gibsons police force will see a new, completely independent side to her.
