Mufasa Didn't Explain an Important Part of Scar's History Before The Lion King

Mufasa: The Lion King explores the story of Mufasa and Scar years before The Lion Kingfilling in some gaps and including new revelations, but one aspect of Scar's story was left out. Although the Lion King prequel is titled after Simba's father and is framed around his story, Scar's origin story is also a key component that the 2024 film explores. This meant delving deeply into the brotherhood that Mufasa and Taka felt, even though they are not biological brothers. The tragic element Mufasa: The Lion KingScar's ending did a great job of setting up Scar's storyline in the original film.

The film's ending fully reveals how Scar got the scar and why he was no longer called by his birth name, Taka. He decided to help Kiros after feeling betrayed because Mufasa would fall in love with Sarabi when he felt she would be his queen. Instead of completing his villainous turn, Taka decided to save Mufasa from Kiros' attack, scarring him over his left eye. Taka takes on Scar's name as a permanent reminder of this betrayal. This pretty much covers everything audiences need to know about Scar's life before The Lion King - with one big exception.

Scar's connection to hyenas in The Lion King isn't explained in Mufasa

Hyenas are absent from Mufasa: The Lion King

Scar of the Lion King and his 3 hyenas.

Scar's master plan in The Lion King revolves around the hyenas helping him kill Mufasa and scare away Simba, as well as coercing them into fighting alongside him against the pride of lions at the end. It was somewhat expected, then, that Mufasa would address how Scar - a lion - befriended and commanded all the hyenas. THE Lion King the prequel answers almost every question viewers might have about the characters and their backstories, going so far as to show things like the formation of Pride Rock or where Rafiki got his team.

This is what makes the absence of hyenas in Scar's story so surprising. The film was the perfect opportunity to explain how Taka integrated with the hyenas and convinced them to follow him. There's the obvious parallel of being excluded from the animal kingdom that the original film establishes, but there was room to go deeper. Mufasa: The Lion King It ultimately leaves the story between Scar and the hyenas as a lingering mystery, one that would require future chapters to be fully explained.

Why Mufasa doesn't include hyenas in Scar's story

There is no clear place for them in history

The best answer to why hyenas were left out of Scar's story in Mufasa: The Lion King can be found in the story told. The film chronicles two parts of Mufasa and Scar's lives, with the majority centering on their journey to find Milele. While they are in the jungle encountering other animals such as elephants, hyenas never come into the picture. This may be because hyenas did not live in the areas they traveled through. There are some hyenas present in Milelehowever, then perhaps Scar had never encountered them before this.

This would mean that only after Mufasa becomes king does Scar begin to befriend the hyenas. Since the hyenas are not normally welcome at Pride Rock in The Lion KingSomething must have happened that prompted Mufasa to warn them to stay away. Only after this will Scar begin to think of them as allies who could help him eliminate Mufasa and Simba so he can take the throne. If that's the case, this is a story for a point in Mufasa and Scar's lives later. Mufasa: The Lion Kingevents.
