The Lion King the franchise has grown to become absolutely massive since the original animated film was released in 1994, and now that Mufasa: The Lion King is expanding the titular lion's world, here's a complete rundown of Mufasa and Simba's family tree. The Lion King The franchise has always revolved around Mufasa's hierarchy, with four generations of the family being highlighted in each of the many films and TV shows. So here are all of Mufasa and Simba's family members that were revealed in The Lion King and Mufasa: The Lion Kingexplained.

The 2019 live action The Lion King The remake brought Disney's iconic 1994 animated film back into the spotlight, even though the film was nothing more than a retelling of the original story. Fortunately, the live-action series is finally moving past this with the release of Mufasa: The Lion Kinga prequel focused on Mufasa and Scar's childhood that tells how the former became king. Mufasa: The Lion King provides much more information about Mufasa and his family than was ever known before, giving more detail to the branches of Mufasa and Simba's family tree.

Mufasa, Simba's father

Means “King”

When discussing Mufasa and Simba's family tree, it only makes sense to start with Mufasa. Mufasa is Simba's father, Sarabi's husband, Kiara and Kion's grandfather, and Scar's adopted brother. Mufasa is the first Lion King seen in the franchise, fathering young Simba and grooming him to be king throughout the first half of the 1994 original and its 2019 remake. Unfortunately, Mufasa is killed by Scar while Simba is still young, meaning he never saw Simba become king or meet Kiara or Kion in the flesh.

Simba, son of Mufasa

Means “Lion”

Simba is the protagonist of 1994 The Lion King and its 2019 remake, with him being a cub at the beginning of the story and becoming an adult king with Timon and Pumbaa after his father's death. Simba is son of Mufasa and Sarabi, husband of Nala, father of Kiara and Kion and nephew of Scar. As a child, Simba had a close relationship with his uncle, Scar. However, after returning to the Pride Lands as an adult and discovering that Scar killed Mufasa, Simba overthrew Scar and took his rightful place as king.

Afia, Mufasa's mother and Simba's grandmother

Means “Vigor”

Afia is a character who was first introduced in the 2024 prequel Mufasa: The Lion KingShe is Mufasa's biological mother. Although Mufasa was adopted as Scar's brother as a child, and he was actually raised by Scar's mother Eshe, Afia is still Mufasa's original biological father. In addition to being Mufasa's mother, Afia is also Sarabi's mother-in-law, Simba's grandmother and Kiara's great-grandmother and Kion.

Sarabi is an important character in the world of The Lion Kingalthough she doesn't have much screen time in the original animated film. Sarabi is Mufasa's wife and Simba's mother, as well as Kiara and Kion's grandmother. Although Mufasa tragically died when Simba was young, Sarabi is still around after his death, with her living in the Pride Lands throughout Scar's authoritarian reign. In the original The Lion King In the story, Nala is the female protagonist of the film, being friends with Simba when they were both cubs. However, the pair separated after Mufasa's death when Simba left the Pride Lands to live with Timon and Pumbaa. Believing Simba to be dead, Nala is shocked to find him years later while hunting. After convincing him to return to defeat Scar, Nala and Simba fall in love, and she becomes his wife. Means “Princess”

Although Kiara is technically seen at the end of the original The Lion King and its 2019 remake, because she is the daughter of Simba and Nala that Rafiki supportsshe was not properly introduced until the 1998 direct-to-DVD sequel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. In the film, young Kiara falls in love with a strange lion named Kovu, who, unknown to her, belongs to a family that worships Scar.

At the end of The Lion King II: Simba's PrideIn the story, another member joined Mufasa and Simba's family tree, this being Kovu. Kovu is a stranger despised by Kiara's family. Despite this, Kiara still loved him, and the two ended up together at the end of the film. This makes Kovu's companion Kiara and Simba and Nala's son-in-lawwith him finally being accepted into the family.

Means “Leader”

Kiara is not Simba and Nala's only child, as the TV series sequel says The Lion Guard reveals that they had another son: Kion. Kion is the prince of the Pride Lands and the leader of the Lion Guard. son of Simba and Nala, grandson of Mufasa and Sarabi, brother of Kiara and companion of Rani.

Means “Queen”

Another member of Mufasa and Simba's family who was introduced in The Lion Guard It's Rani. First seen in season 3, Rani was the leader of the Night Guard and became Kion's companion, making her Simba and Nala's daughter-in-law and Kiara's sister-in-law.

Scar, Mufasa's “brother” and Simba's “uncle”

Originally called Taka, which means “trash”

The last member of the Mufasa and Simba family tree is Scar, although Mufasa: The Lion King reveals that he is not related by blood to the rest of the characters. Instead, Scar took in Mufasa as a cub, and the two became adopted brothers. This made Scar Mufasa's brother and Simba's uncle, although he wasn't around for long, as Simba kills Scar at the end of The Lion King as revenge for Scar killing Mufasa.
