A new image from the set of Monster Season 3 reveals first look at Sons of Anarchy alumnus Charlie Hunnam as infamous serial killer Ed Gein. After the great success of Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendezwhich debuted on Netflix in September, it was announced that season 3 would focus on killer Ed Gein. The third part of the true crime anthology is currently titled The Original Monsterwith a supporting cast that so far includes Laurie Metcalf as Ed Gein’s mother, Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock and Olivia Williams as Alma Hitchcock.
AHS Zone shared a photo of Hunnam in X, which appears to show the actor smiling on the set of the anthology created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The photo is accompanied by an actual black and white image of Gein. In the set photo, Hunnam looks a little aged. He has short, gray hair. He is also dressed in a patterned brown shirt reminiscent of Gein’s attire.

What the latest photo says about Monster season 3
Could be a different take on the anthology
When explaining why he chose Gein to Monster season 3 co-creator Ryan Murphy noted that he was interested in exploring where the fascination with serial killers began. Gein, who confessed to killing two women and exhumed corpses to use skin and bones as souvenirs, is considered the inspiration for horror films such as Psychopath and THE Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That’s probably where the Hitchcocks cast comes in.
Monster the third season, taking a more distanced view of the crime, would help to distinguish itself from the previous two installments. But the period is also significantly different, as Hunnam’s perspective demonstrates. Gein died in 1984, gaining notoriety in 1954. This is a bit distant from the 1990s timeline that Murphy always liked to revisit.
Our Take on Monster Season 3
It should be different
Monster received a lot of backlash, accused of glorifying its subject matter in the first season. The second season was even wilder and generally derided, as the marketing painted the Menendez brothers as lovers. Certain scenes also supported this idea, which was widely criticized online. Both installments come with positives regarding performance and steering, but hopefully, the next outing may curb Murphy’s lewder impulses.
