1000 Pound Sisters season 5 features a scene where Misty and Amanda Halterman make a big announcement. They informed the brothers that they intended to undergo weight loss surgery. “Me and Misty are going to see Dr. Smith,” Amanda told Chris. Dr. Eric Smith is the bariatric surgeon who treated Tammy and Chris. During the discussion, the Slatons expressed their fears about the weight loss procedure, which can include complications and even death. As Tammy, Amy and Chris have undergone the surgery, they understand that the procedure can be dangerous.

Misty had weight loss surgery in March 2023 and Dr. posted a clip of Misty going into surgery on Instagram. The caption reads, in part, "Did you know that bariatric surgery can cause remission of type 2 diabetes in patients?"In the Instagram clip, Misty's brother Chris is with Misty at the hospital as she is wheeled into the procedure room. Before losing weight, Misty was taking several diabetes medications to keep blood sugar at healthy levels.

Misty didn't go into surgery alone. She underwent surgery on the same day as her other sister, 44-year-old Amanda Halterman. They had consecutive surgeries performed by the same doctor. Amanda had already had bariatric surgery once.more than a decade ago, but has gained the weight back. Although it is not uncommon for a person to need revision bariatric surgery, the second surgery carries greater risk. Fortunately, Misty and Amanda came out of surgery with flying colors. Due to recent setbacks, Amanda didn't lose as much weight as Misty after surgery.

The caption reads: "A local coffee shop posted a photo of Amy, Amanda and Misty. According to the coffee shop, they stopped while filming at a different location. I wonder where Tammy is..." While it's possible that Tammy took the photograph, it seems more likely that she simply wasn't there.

When Misty first appeared in 1000 Pound Sistersshe weighed 240 pounds. After struggling with her weight her entire life and taking diabetes medication for many years, she decided to have bariatric surgery in March 2023. Misty went from weighing 240 to weighing just 166 poundsand was able to stop taking any of his diabetes medications. After losing 74 pounds, Misty looks like a completely different person, and losing weight has even made her look younger.
