Notice! Spoilers for Netflix's Missing You ahead!
The end of I miss you watched Kat Donovan find all the answers – even the ones she didn't want to hear. The Netflix miniseries followed Kat 11 years after her father's murder, the details of which never reached her mind. His father, a police officer named Clint Donovan, is believed to have been stabbed by criminal Monte Leburne, who confessed to the crime after being arrested for other murders. Still, there was another fingerprint on the knife, which led Kat to suspect there was something more to her father's death in I miss you than the police seemed willing to accept.
To make matters even worse, Kat's fiancé, Josh Buchanan, left her without a word after Clint's murder. Eleven years later, she has still not found new success in love, focusing all her energy on her work as a detective. However, everything changed when Kat joined a dating app and unexpectedly matched with Josh. Around the same time, a young man reported his father missing, noting that the woman had just gone on vacation with none other than Josh. Kat was left to pick up the pieces in Harlan Coben's film I miss youand the answers she found were far from what she expected.
Who killed Kat's father because he missed her
Clint Donovan's murder wasn't what it seemed
All over I miss youKat slowly began to learn that her father was not the man she thought he was. Clint Donovan was a corrupt cop who worked for crime lord Calligan for a hefty salary. This meant that virtually anyone could have ordered the murder of Kat's father, and the end of I miss you I saw the detective essentially accept that she may never have all the answers. However, the partial fingerprint on the murder weapon came back with a match. Soon after Kat rekindled the flame between her and Josh, she discovered that her own fiancé had killed Clint.
Josh explained that Clint's death was an accident. Kat's friend Aqua saw Clint with her lover and the man chased her home to ensure she would never share what she had seen with Kat. In his distress over the revelation of his darkest secrets, Clint became violent towards Aqua, even picking up a knife and brandishing it at her. That's when Josh walks in and in an effort to fend off the knife, Clint is accidentally stabbed. Kat's boss, Ellis Stagger, convinced criminal Monte Leburne to take responsibility to protect Josh, Aqua and Clint's reputations.
Explanation of why Josh left Kat after his father's death
Josh couldn't handle his big secret
Previously on I miss youWhen Kat learned that Monte Leburne hadn't killed her father after all, she discovered that Josh had visited the criminal in prison. This would have happened just before he packed up all his things from Kat's apartment and disappeared without a trace. Finding out exactly why Josh visited Leburne became Kat's obsession. She knew it must have something to do with why Josh left her. For a time, Stagger convinced Kat that Josh was gone so as not to risk revealing what he had learned in prison - that LeBurne was innocent.
Josh left because he couldn't bear to see Kat mourn the man he killed.
This was not entirely true. Instead, the Netflix series finale reveals that Josh left because he couldn't bear to see Kat mourn the man he himself killed. He couldn't tell the truth about why he did it, as it would mean tarnishing Kat's flowery memory of her father. She didn't know that Clint was a corrupt cop or an adulterer or that the man had attacked and almost killed Aqua. Josh disappeared from Kat's life to spare her the pain to learn all this. However, he never stopped loving her.
Clint Donovan's Affair and Secret Affiliation Explained
Kat's father was a complicated man
Kat believed her father, Clint, was the perfect man. He was a great husband, father, and police officer, and she held onto that belief for more than a decade after his death. However, in truth, Clint was much more complicated, and the man's secrets were revealed from the moment Leburne admitted that he had not killed him. Kat had long suspected that Clint's death was a hit ordered by crime lord Calligan. However, she eventually learned that her father was on Calligan's payroll. Still, the officer didn't agree to work for Calligan simply for the money.
Calligan knew that Clint Donovan was having an affair and used this information to get the officer on his side. This went beyond the typical infidelity common in the department during Clint's heyday. While looking for Clint's lover, Kat discovered the name "Parker." After some investigation, she discovered that this was the name of the man with whom her father had been in a romantic relationship for decades. It was Parker with whom Aqua saw Clint that fateful dayand for this secret that Kat's father had died.
The Fate of Missing You, Missing People Explained
After all, these cases weren't linked to Josh
It seemed for a while I miss you that Josh Buchanan was up to something terrible. After Kat matched with Josh on the dating app Melody, a boy named Brandon showed up to report that his mother, Dana Fells, was missing. Brandon said Dana met a man at Melodyand they went on vacation together; At that point, his mother stopped answering his calls or returning texts. Brandon knew something was wrong, so he investigated the mysterious man who took his mother away. Brandon eventually discovered it was none other than Josh Buchanan.
The revelation that Josh had something to do with the missing people in I miss you intended to imply that he had something to do with Clint Donovan's death. Of course, this was only true since Josh accidentally killed Clint while defending Aqua. Further investigation by Kat revealed that someone was using Josh's photo to scam people on the dating app. Once they were sufficiently in love, they would be lured to meet their new boyfriend online, at which point they would be kidnapped, robbed and murdered.
The person behind this was a dog breeder named Titus. His operation saw him kidnap the individuals he had catfished, convince them to provide their bank account information, and burn their bodies on his considerable farm. Their loved ones and the police would conclude that they had fled abroad with their new lovers and close the case without ever finding their way to Titus. Fortunately, Josh had nothing to do with this operation, as I miss you had been implied. Still, if Titus hadn't used Josh's photos to trick Dana, Kat might never have come forward or solved the case.
