Minthara may become an oathbreaker in these rare interactions

In Baldur’s Gate 3The paladin class’ defining ability is its sacred oaths. There is a fellow paladin in the game, Minthara, who follows the Oath of Vengeance. Even if the party will betray her, a universal way for a paladin character to break their paladin oaths is to reveal the location of the Emerald Grove to Minthara in Act 1. However, as Minthara as a non-companion is a crucial element as part of this mission, some players may wonder if Minthara might break her oath.

Minthara can only be recruited after Act 1 and obviously cannot be part of the party while attacking the grove. Despite the player character breaking his own oath by taking her side, when she is encountered again in Act 2, she will still be a Vengeance Paladin. A paladin’s oath is fundamental to their character, so a main character breaking the oath would be quite significant. With that said, is Minthara capable of becoming an Oathbreaker?

How to make Minthara become an Oathbreaker

Minthara can break her oath after joining the player in Act 2 and Act 3

The short answer is yes, Minthara can become an Oathbreaker. The most direct way to get her to this status is to respect her by using Withers and changing her subclass to Oath of the Ancients before killing a random NPC. However, this can be done with any character or companion, and Minthara can still become an Oathbreaker while keeping her canonical oath. This can be accomplished by having her in your party while committing particularly heinous acts or showing mercy to the wicked.

Minthara’s best ways to become an Oathbreaker come from questionable acts of mercy. In Punish the Wicked, for example, the group has the option to forgive Madeline. By doing so, Minthara will break her oath, as well as telling her to stab herself and then stopping her. This stands out as a decision that perfectly represents how breaking the Oath of Vengeance works, as Refraining from punishing an alleged wrongdoer goes against the oath. Likewise, letting a key character from Shadowheart’s story live after an Act 3 fight could break the Oath of Vengeance.

On the other hand, some options for becoming an Oath of Vengeance Oathbreaker may not always work for Minthara. Killing the Strange Ox after sharing his thoughts will cause any Dark Urge Origin character to become an Oathbreaker, but characters with other origins will not suffer the same fate. It’s also simply harder to get Minthara to break her oath in general. Most opportunities to break the Oath of Vengeance come from roleplaying, and if the main player character is dealing with the scenario and not MInthara herself, he can sometimes get away with it.

Minthara becoming an Oathbreaker works the same way a player breaking her oath would – the Oathbreaker Knight appears to her, and the player has to decide whether they would like Minthara to keep her previous subclass or not. As seen in Pikajulie Artvideo on YouTube, Minthara’s dialogue when the player asks her about the nature of her oath will also change slightly upon becoming an Oathbreaker.. She will declare that she is happy to no longer be bound by her oath, another of the many details in Baldur’s Gate 3 which demonstrate how well thought out it is.

Why isn’t Minthara already an oathbreaker?

History of Minthara’s Oath in Baldur’s Gate 3

Since players break their oath by siding with Minthara, players may wonder why her oath still holds while theirs does not. The generally accepted answer is that she technically never broke her oath. Her character appears to have a theme of serving various causes, such as Lolth, Orin, and The Absolute, and upon realizing her corruption, directing her revenge towards them. The player meets Minthara as she serves the Absolute. Although the player knows that most of the forest’s inhabitants are innocent, Minthara did not see them as such, being under the influence of the Absolute.

When Minthara is recruited, she will direct her revenge on Orin and the Absolute rather than those who opposed them. While she has very different motivations than before, this still technically falls within her oath. She never stopped punishing those who threatened her cause – what she considered her cause only changed. Minthara is one of the most misunderstood and underused characters in the main series Baldur’s Gate 3 cast, but exploring different ways to break her oath proves how interesting she can be.
