Mike Flanagan’s Update Completely Changes My Opinion About His New Stephen King Remake, Making Me Much More Excited

Mike Flanagan provided an update on his Carrie TV series, and now I’m much more excited about the Stephen King remake. When it was announced that Stephen King Carrie was being adapted into a TV show, I was initially skeptical. The story has been told multiple times, and I wasn’t sure exactly how a show would stretch the story out over an entire season’s worth of episodes. However, Mike Flanagan has provided some more details about his remake of Carrieand now I’m much more optimistic about the next Stephen King series.

Carrie is one of Stephen King’s most popular stories, following the titular student as she uses her supernatural powers to get revenge on her high school bullies and bullies. Carrie It was most famously adapted into one of my favorite horror films, the 1976 Brian De Palma film CarrieThis is also one of the best films based on a Stephen King story. Carrie it later had a sequel in 1999, a TV movie in 2002, and a feature-length theatrical remake in 2013, starring Mike Flanagan. Carrie being the latest in a line of remakes and sequels.

I think Mike Flanagan is right about updating Carrie after initial doubts

He made a good point about his setup

Potentially due to the online backlash that surrounded the Carrie TV show, Mike Flanagan commented on how Stephen King responded to his Carrie ideas. According to Flanagan, he was initially hesitant to do Carriewondering if it needed to be done again. However, he ended up doing”some pretty substantial changes“Upon realizing that he can use Carrie to explore issues facing high school students today. For example, Flanagan was interested in how telephones would change Carriethe story. Here are his full comments on the changes:

And I can’t spoil the changes we made to find a story that felt like it needed to be told. But we made some pretty substantial changes. When I took this to Stephen King – because this is the other side of this, if Steve says no, he doesn’t want to see this happen, we’re not going to do it; I’m not willing to do that in this relationship. And so when I mentioned it to him and said, “What do you think of Carrie for TV?” He said, “Well, why? Leave her alone. She’s fine, she’s done. I’d rather we focus on other things.” But when I sent him the layout of how I saw it could work, he really liked it. And he came back and said, “Actually, yes, I think this is interesting and I think it could be very relevant and very exciting.” And that’s when I said yes, we should do this. I can’t say more about it unless we’re in the writers’ room. We’re having a lot of fun and I think we’re going to tell a story that will be surprising and impactful, very relevant to our modern society and the issues in our country. My oldest son is 14 and I look at him as I work on this story and I think it’s important for his generation. I think there will be something there that I hope will be useful to them in this world. But yeah, I’m really glad we’re doing this. I’m having a lot of fun.

Although I was initially concerned about Flanagan’s case Carrie remake, I can’t deny that he’s right about its potential for a modern retelling.. The original Carrie I couldn’t take into account things like cyberbullying and the fact that every kid has a phone, which means the torment Carrie goes through could be even more inevitable in a remake. This would also give Carrie enough space to expand its story across multiple episodes, explaining why the series needs to be a TV show instead of a movie.

Mike Flanagan has long proven he can update Stephen King’s stories

He got success after success

Although I would be more worried if someone else was doing the TV show, if someone else was going to do it Carrie Great, it’s Mike Flanagan. Mike Flanagan has long proven that he can take Stephen King’s stories and update them in fantastic ways, with many of his most popular projects doing just that. Geraldo’s game and Doctor Sleep are both films directed by Flanagan based on the stories of Stephen King, with Flanagan making major updates to their events and turning them into incredibly critically successful films.

Flanagan’s next film Chuck’s life is already proving that Flanagan can still do itwith the film being one of the most acclaimed films of 2024. Flanagan has made major updates to non-Stephen King stories that are so classic they are almost considered sacred. Flanagan’s Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House added many new elements and set the story in the modern day, and despite these changes, it is one of his most beloved projects.

What’s Mike Flanagan’s most exciting next Stephen King project?

He has several in progress.

THE Carrie The miniseries is an exciting project from Mike Flanagan, but it’s not his most exciting. Chuck’s life is considered one of the director’s best films, and its performance at film festivals has made it his most exciting next King project for me.

However, Mike Flanagan’s other incredibly exciting project is his The Dark Tower TV series. After The Dark Tower film’s failure, Mike Flanagan’s decision to take it on as a TV show is incredibly moving, potentially doing Stephen King’s books justice. I can’t wait to see The Dark Tower adapt once again, which is even more exciting to me than Carrie.
