Warning: Contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fans are currently in a brand new era of the franchise, one that's kicking off by delving into each Turtle brother individually before expanding the broader storyline — and Michelangelo is the latest recipient of that treatment. The first four issues will delve into Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Donatello, respectively. The first TMNT comic featured Raphael, and the second issue tackles Michelangelo, where his new nickname is just revealed. And that nickname comes with huge changes to his iconic nunchaku.
in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 by Jason Aaron and Rafael Albuquerque The TMNT split up, each making their own way in the world. That's where fans find Michelangelo, who actually managed to become a world-famous movie star. Mikey stars in action movies where he battles monstrous kaiju, takes down hordes of ninjas, and even shreds gnarly waves. This allows Mikey to eat the best food, live in the most extravagant penthouses, and generally reap the benefits of super-stardom. However, no amount of fame or fortune managed to keep their real danger at bay.
Michelangelo was attacked by the Foot Clan in his penthouse one night while trying to enjoy some pizza (which the Foot actually poisoned). Weakened, exhausted and alone, Mikey had his back against the wall. That is, until he grabbed a pair of donuts that only his wealth could afford, the ones that were encrusted with diamonds. His upgraded nunchaku helped Michelangelo win the battle against the Foot Clan, but more than that, they perfectly complimented his all-new nickname in TMNT Study: "Party David Supreme".
Michelangelo's new nickname perfectly honors his TMNT history
Michelangelo was introduced as a "Party Dude" in the 1987 TMNT Animated Series
Michelangelo's nickname is a perfect example of this New chapter in TMNT History is not only charting a new course for the Turtle Brothers, but also honoring everything that came before. In the opening theme song of the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated series, each turtle is introduced along with their defining attributes, and Mikey's is that of a "party dude". This was the cartoon's way of explaining that Michelangelo is the turtle who embodies the 'teenage' aspect of their team name, while highlighting his fun-loving nature.
Now, in the current TMNT canon, Michelangelo is living every teenager's dream. He is a world-famous action movie star who can party all the time and can afford to buy the best of everything. Indeed, Michelangelo became the "Party David Supreme", something that took over every aspect of his personality - including his weapons.
Now that Mikey is separated from his brothers, he's decided to go all-in on being a 'party dude'
Originally, Michelangelo's 'party dude' persona was secondary to his identity as a ninja. Sure, he liked to go out and have fun, but Mikey was still a skilled warrior who stayed on top of his training and intensely studied martial arts. indeed during his TMNT story, Michelangelo and his brothers are able to defeat deadly warlords, interdimensional aliens, and even literal gods, all because of their unparalleled ninja skills. However, it seems that now that Mikey is separated from his brothers, he has decided to go all-in on being a 'party dude', and his new nickname perfectly captures that.
Michelangelo merges the two main aspects of his personality: party dude and ninja
Michelangelo's New Nunchaku combines its two halves
One of the coolest parts of Michelangelo getting a new nickname is how it's perfectly accompanied by his new diamond-encrusted nunchaku. Not only are his new weapons much flashier (and very well suited for a 'party dude' like Mikey), but they're also deadlier. No longer is Michelangelo hacking away at his enemies with only wooden nunchucks, but ones made of diamonds, making the punches they pack infinitely more detrimental on impact - especially in the hands of a skilled wielder like Michelangelo.
In a way, Michelangelo's greater acceptance of being a party dude actually made him an even greater threat to his enemies. His vast wealth affords him resources he's never been able to afford before, his fame and notoriety makes him virtually untouchable (as the world would notice if something really happened to him), and - of course - his new nunchaku makes him a Deadlier fighter. It seems that being a 'party dude' is more than just skating, playing video games and eating pizza, it's also a means of becoming a more dangerous warrior, something Michelangelo pulls off brilliantly in this TMNT Surrender.
