Miguel delayed its release date. Miguel is the next biopic about the king of pop Michael Jacksonchronicling his musical career. It will be directed by The equalizer franchise director Antoine Fuqua. Playing the titular musician is Jafaar Jackson, a real-life relative of Michael Jackson. Miguel also features a cast that includes Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Colman Domingo, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, Kendrick Sampson and Derek Luke. The script was written by John Logan and the film will be produced by John Branca, David B. Householter, Graham King, John McClain and Justin Simien.
According to Collider, Miguel has officially postponed its release date. THE biopic is now scheduled for release on October 3, 2025. This represents a six-month delay, as the film was originally slated for release in April. Distributor Lionsgate has hinted that it likes what it sees in the film and wants to bring it closer to its awards season release.
What does this mean for Michael
Michael could be an awards contender
Typically, a delay in release date could be a harbinger of doom for an unreleased filmas it may indicate delays in production, among other things. This was not the case Miguelplacing the film in a unique position. In truth, Miguel closed months ago, finishing filming in May 2024. This rapid production positions the film in a powerful position, as it has more time to refine editing in post-production, as well as make a coherent advertising strategy.
Change the release date from April to October too increases enormously Miguelprize potential. While it’s possible that spring releases will garner attention at the Oscars and other major awards shows, the strongest contenders tend to be released later in the year. Since Lionsgate is pushing for a fall 2025 release, that means they’re seeing Fuqua’s film as a big draw for the studio in the 2025 to 2026 awards season, boding well for the film.
Our Take on Michael’s Release Date Change
It’s a risk (but it might be worth taking)
Although Lionsgate may argue otherwise, I think there are two sides to the coin when it comes to release date changes. On the one hand, it is the time when members of the Academy and other important judging bodies most expect to see the best films of the year. On the other hand, this makes October a more competitive season than April. In addition to the other art award contenders, this is the most popular month for horror films. So while Miguel may have more awards potential with this release date, but it will also face greater competition at the box office.
