Michael Dorn Addresses Worf’s Future After Bringing the Character Back Star Trek: Picard season 3. The first Klingon warrior to join Starfleet, Worf formed a key part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV and film cast, also becoming one of the few TNG characters to move on to the spinoff show Deep Space Nine. So it was no surprise to see Worf back in the fold for Star Trek: Picardas the Paramount+ series has put together a full-on TNG meeting. Picard Season 4 has not yet been confirmed.
It is not yet known whether TNGThe Klingon noble will make another appearance in Star Trek universe, but Worf actor Dorn is leaving the door open for that to happen. Dorn spoke to Star Trek Explorer on Picard season 3 poker game ending scene (a homage to TNGclassic ending to “All Good Things…”), and whether viewers will see Worf in action again (via TrekMovie):
“When we made the first The Next Generation, that card game, you knew we were saying goodbye to those guys in the genre. We went straight from filming the end of The Next Generation to filming the first film. We got this. I never thought this would be goodbye. I didn’t think so, but the problem is they just let the camera roll. We were very out of character and being ourselves. The one thing I tell everyone is that you never say never in Star Trek. You just never say never. It’s one of those things that will be available at some point.”
Dorn emphasized that he will “Never say Never” with Walkbut he also warned that setting up a new project is never easy:
“Again, I would never say never, never say, ‘Oh, that’s it.’ But many things need to happen for Worf to return. It takes twenty things to fit together, and in this business, you just don’t have that kind of system anymore, where there’s that creative guy who says, ‘You know what? We need this. Make it happen’ or ‘Oh, that’s not a bad idea. Let me hear. It’s a different world and I don’t know what that means anymore. And I’m actually retiring slowly but surely.”
What this means for the future of Worf’s Star Trek
Worf continued to evolve in Picard season 3
Worf’s presence on the Enterprise bridge in TNG it provided the writers with the opportunity to explore the Klingon race and their mysterious honor-based culture, while also creating many moments of comic relief as the stoic Klingon reacted with amazement to human behavior. In PicardWorf became a Starfleet Intelligence agent and surprisingly put aside his violent Klingon ways to embrace pacifism. Worf was still alive at the end of Picard season 3, and still friends with his former Enterprise crewmates.
At the same time, there were rumors of a possible Worf spin-off (rumors fueled largely by Dorn himself), but a show centered on the character would likely be a flop in the current climate.
Following your new observations, it seems that if Star Trek comes to call again, Dorn will answer. At the same time, Dorn seems less than optimistic about an interesting new Walk project coming up. He laments the changes in Hollywood, where singular creative voices now struggle to be heard. It looks like Dorn is ready to pull the plug, but then again, he leaves the door open to playing Worf once again. Rumors circulated of a Picard sequence of the program titled Star Trek: Legacybut there has been no solid news about such a project.
Our Take on Whether Worf Will Return (or Should)
Worf spinoffs have been rumored in the past
There will always be a place in Star Trek universe for Worf, a beloved character who has provided many memorable moments over the decades. Dorn’s performance as Worf has remained steadfast throughout all these years, a truly admirable feat of acting, and Dorn himself never seems to lose his enthusiasm for donning his Klingon makeup and exploring his signature character.
Worf has in fact been explored a lot in several Star Trek shows and movies, and it could be argued that all of the character’s possibilities have been exhausted. At the same time, there were rumors of a possible Worf spin-off (rumors fueled largely by Dorn himself), but a show centered on the character would likely be a flop in the current climate. Star Trek: Picard Season 4 isn’t happening yet, but if it does, Worf would be a welcome addition to the cast of characters.
