Mew ex is one of the face cards for Pokémon TCG Pocketthe latest expansion Mythical Islandand a lot of players are probably trying to figure out how to build around that. Psychic Pokémon have proven to be dominant in Pokémon TCG Pocket thanks to strong energy support from Gardevoir. Thanks to the new Mythical Slab Trainer card, Mythical Island it just added more support for this type of Pokémon. This, along with Mew's prominence in the new set's main art, brought attention to the 151st Pokémon.
There are currently a few meta builds involving Mew ex. Possibly the most powerful of these is simply the original version of Mewtwo ex with Mew ex added along with the new Mythical Slab and Leaf trainer cards. With only one copy of Mew ex in the deck, this is yet another version of Mewtwo ex that just runs Mew ex as an additional option. A slightly more interesting - although less ideal - construction is Mew's ex pairing with Weezing to create a deck with a surprising amount of staying power.
Mew Ex deck card list
Players will need two copies of Mew Ex for this version
At first glance, this deck seems a little weak in terms of its Pokémon's HP. Weezing and Mew ex can be worn down quickly or suffer a one-hit KO from some of the biggest Pokémon in the game. However, thanks to this deck's Trainer cards - namely Koga and Budding Expeditioner - This deck has some creative ways to get around your Pokémon's fragility.. X Speed can also help Mew ex and Koffing retreat for free, which will be a little more energy efficient than recovering them. Which is better depends on the amount of damage done to the Pokémon.
It's important to note that although this appears to be a two-type deck, it should only be run with Dark Energy. When building, if the deck attempts to automatically add Psychic and Dark Energy, manually remove the Psychic Energy. Although this means missing Mew ex's first attack, the efficiency gained is worth it. You don't want to be locked out of attacking with Weezing early on because the random energy system keeps providing Psychic instead of Dark.
Best strategy to win with a Mew Ex
This version of Mew Ex is centered around its ability to hack the genome
For this deck, the ideal start is to put a Koffing in the active position and then evolve into Weezing in TCG Pocket. Weezing can take some early damage while chipping away at the opposing Pokémon's health with both Poison and its Tackle. While Weezing is active, Mew ex can begin building up energy, preparing for an attack. Mew ex's Genome Hacking is capable of taking out large Pokémon like Charizard ex and Mewtwo ex, as both have attacks greater than its own HP. This gives Mew ex an advantage over them as it doesn't waste energy after attacking.
When Mew is ready to attack, you can switch Weezing using Koga. This will mean not wasting energy on Weezing's high recoil cost, with the added benefit that Weezing can be replayed without any damage counters.
The advantage of using Koga is that you can avoid losing a point when KOing Weezing. This allows you to lose one of your Mew exes, but not lose the entire battle.
Of course, Pokémon TCG Pocket does not always provide the perfect starting hand. If you are forced to put Mew ex in the active location to begin with, you have a few options to help keep it alive long enough to attack. One option is to swap it for a Koffing or Weezing as quickly as possible, preferably using X Speed to avoid wasting energy. Alternatively, if Mew ex took a lot of damage, you can return it to your hand with Budding Expeditioner and play it again fully healed.
Adding Mew Ex to a Mewtwo Ex Deck
Mew Ex is probably a better supplement than Face Card
One downside to using Mew ex as the center of your own deck is that its Genome Hacking attack has some major weaknesses. For example, if you're facing an ex-Pikachu deck, it won't do any damage since you're not using any Electric Pokémon on your bench. This is why adding Mew ex to an existing version of Mewtwo ex can make better use of the card. This also saves you from having to open many Mythical Island packs chasing a second Mew ex.
This build allows you to make the most of all the support Psychic types receive while having Mewtwo's ex to make up for Mew's ex's shortcomings. Although you may have been drilling a former Mewtwo build since Pokémon TCG Pocket was released in October, you might be tired of it at this point, it's hard to deny how powerful it is. Adding Mew ex and new trainer cards like Mythical Slab only helped make him more efficient and give him more weapons.
