Matthew Lillard addresses whether he’s returning to Scream 7. Lillard played Stu Macher in the original 1996 version of the film Scream. Stu is a friend and accomplice of Billy Loomisand a secondary antagonist in the film, who goes on a murder spree along with Billy. Stu only appeared in Screambut Lillard made appearances in Scream 2 and the 2022 reboot of Scream. After Scream was released in 2022, Scream VI was released the following year and now, Scream 7 is under development.
Talking to ColliderLillard discusses whether he would return to Scream franchise. According to the actor, he is “not involved in Scream.” He then shyly said that he must be a “big liar“if he is involved in Scream 7also saying “Am I telling the truth? Who wants to know the truth?“He then joked about his on-screen death, saying”Every Thursday of the second month [he] to tear down[s] a TV on [his] head. [He’s] like ‘he’s still alive!’.” Check out Lillard’s full quote below:
“I’m not involved Scream and if I am, I am one excellent liar. I don’t know! Am I telling the truth? Who wants to know the truth? I don’t know. Every Thursday of the second month I drop a TV on my head. I’m like, ‘He’s still alive! Put him in the movie!'”
What this means for the Scream franchise
Stu’s return would be difficult to manage
In his funny response, Lillard brings up the legitimate challenge of getting Stu back into the fold. Scream franchise. In the original 1996 film, Stu was killed by protagonist Sidney Prescott. His method of death was to be electrocuted and crushed by a 50-pound CRT TV that fell on his head. As Lillard humorously notes in his statement, it would be difficult for Stu to survive this. So, if they brought him back, the series would have a lot of explaining to do.
Just because Stu isn’t coming back, though, doesn’t mean there won’t be a Lillard cameo at some point Scream 7. After all, Lillard appeared in 2022 Scream as a voice, despite Stu not being in the film. With Lillard being so shrewd about whether he’s involved in Screama cameo of this nature still seems possible. Time will tell as development progresses Scream 7 continues; As it stands, it’s not slated for release until 2026.
Our Take on Matthew Lillard Scream Return Chances
Scream has brought characters back before
At first glance, Stu’s return to Scream 7 it would be absurd given his death. However, the Scream the franchise is known for having unexpected returns. Hayden Panettiere’s character died off-screen at the end of Scream 4but she ended up going back to Scream VI years later. The big difference between these deaths would be that Lillard’s occurred on screen rather than off, but it still shows that there is precedent for the series going in unexpected directions.
