In anticipation of its premiere, Screen Rant Interviewed Mary Mack and Sean Giambrone to discuss The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown OctoberJesse’s Bigger Season 5 Arc and What It Meant for Mack, The “Weird“The nature of Jesse and Yumiulak’s spooky transformation, their differing feelings on the horror genre, and Giambrone’s thoughts on a Goldbergs Revival.
The duo was surprised to learn about the Halloween special sequel
“… They created so many ideas and lore in the first one, and it’s just really clever.”
Screen Rant: I love that we get a Halloween Special Part 2Because the first one was such a fun ride from start to finish. Sean, I’ll start with you and then Mary, what was it like when you saw the script for what this special would be?
Sean Giambrone: Oh, well, I loved it. I didn’t know we were going to do a sequel to a holiday special, but I just thought it was super clever, because they created so many ideas and knowledge in the first one, and it was really clever. All they did was crack me up, and then introducing another holiday to duel with this holiday is just a really fun idea. And Halloween just has so many opportunities. Look at all the backgrounds of each shot, there are a bunch of different words, so I’m very happy that we have this sequel.
Mary Mack: Me too. Yes, the Great Pumpkin, you can’t go around bringing that back. And I mean, come on, you have to explode as many pumpkins as you possibly can while you have the chance. So, I think that’s pretty smart. Keep exploding the pumpkins. [Laughs]
mack isJust honored“By how the writers approach Jesse’s character
“… They know where I’m from, and they don’t make me hide it.”
If we get a trilogy of Halloween specials, I will certainly be very happy. So Mary, I would really like to turn to you next. I haven’t had the chance to talk to you Solar opposites Season 5. I love seeing Jessie get a bigger arc this season, especially as we learned that she’s a little higher up the pecking order on this team. What was it like getting to dive into that side of you this past season?
Mary Mack: You know, you record each of these episodes, and you’re like, “Oh, I should have done this, this, and this. But I hope it all came out the way they wanted it to come across.” But I never realized that I was the main character of a show until after the show happened, after we recorded it. And I was like, “Oh, wait a second. That was a lot of lines. I should probably give them more names.” [Laughs]
But I love it so much, the show is so stupid that I’m just honored. It’s so fun and ridiculous, and also heartwarming, that I’m just honored to have a part in this, and I’m honored that they know my personality, and they know where I’m from, and they don’t make me hide it. They go with it, and I think that’s really great writers and great bosses too.
Yumyulack’s spooky transformation was so crazy that it became “Too uncomfortable”
“The boss was like, ‘It’s creeping me out. I am restless to watch this.’”
Sean, I’ll turn to you next and dive into the Halloween special. So, you essentially turned into a slutty cat, and I would like to hear what it’s like trying to get into the mentality for recording.
Sean Giambrone: It was crazy, Grant. It was me and Sidney, the director, and she was like, “Okay, we’re really going to try to get this. We’re going to get this sexy cat.” So, it was first to try and figure out what the voice would be like, so I was trying to make it sultry or something, and then in my head I thought maybe some Britney Spears or something. But then Sidney’s like, “What a girl, but now make it a little more sorority.”
She said all these terms, and they mean different things, and I had to keep going back, because it was too much of a sexy cat, it was too uncomfortable, really.[Laughs] The host was like, “It’s freaking me out, I’m nervous watching this.” So, they toned it down. It was a very unique experience for me. I have never tried to play this kind of character before.
Mary Mack: I wish to God I could have been there in that room, Sean. I would have so much fun watching you do that. [Laughs]
Sean Giambrone: I don’t know, Mary, it was weird in that room.
Jessie’sJust excited“To be part of the family’s Halloween hijinks (except for Mack’s favorite moment)
“Shame on the writers…”
And then, Mary, you transform into a werewolf, but I love that Jesse doesn’t completely take power from it. I’d love to hear about finding that sort of balance between Jesse’s good nature and then becoming that kind of monster.
Mary Mack: Yeah, I don’t know, I think Jesse was excited to be a part of Halloween in a new way. My favorite part is where she shaves her legs, and then instantly, it pops back. So, she tried to be like a sexy werewolf for a moment, and you can not. You have to communicate. Shame on the writers for making me go all out by shaving my legs, and then the hair pops right back. But I think she’s along for the ride, and she’ll make the most of everything, so I like being a werewolf.
Giambrone’s a major horror fan, but Mack won’t go anywhere near the genre
“Honest to goodness, I can’t sleep when I watch them.”
So, since we’re talking about a Halloween special, and I’m a horror genre fan, I’d love to hear from you both. What are some of your favorite horror movies or just spooky watches for the Halloween season?
Mary Mack: Sean’s got a bunch.
Sean Giambrone: Well, lately I’ve been watching a lot of horror even the last couple of months. But right now, watching some Harry Potter, that second one was kind of spooky. But I also watched Hereditary, and that was freaky. I went to watch one of the Halloween movies, and then I watched Scream for the first time. I’m just bouncing around to all the first time viewings. I don’t really repeat watch anything. For Christmas, I do, but not for Halloween. Do you, Mary?
Mary Mack: I can’t watch scary movies. I will not sleep for two days. I can’t even read a scary book. I can’t even read a Stephen King book. When I was a little kid, I remember my siblings were much older, they made me watch all the Stephen King stuff, like The Shining, and I was so scared, I could never see them again. I can never watch scary movies. I watched the old Nightmare on Elm Street when slumber parties were a thing when we were little.
We shouldn’t have been able to see the movies, and I remember Nightmare on Elm Street scaring the – I can never see anything after that. This is probably the last scary movie I watched. I like when I go on Antiques Roadshow, and it’s a scary antique, and you’re like, “Wow, I didn’t know that would cost that much.” That’s as scary as I want to go. Honest to goodness, I can’t sleep when I watch them.
I don’t blame you. I remember, as a child, seeing these Nightmare on Elm Street trailer with Johnny Depp’s death in it, and I couldn’t sleep for a few days, I was like, “Oh, I can’t even lie down comfortably.”
Mary Mack: Or when she’s in the tub and he comes through the tub with those pink hands and he sucks her off. It’s terrible! I’ll probably get threatened for this, but I don’t care. It traumatized me for the rest of my life.
Giambrone would go back to The Goldbergs “In a heartbeat”
“I don’t know when it will happen…”
I see I’m almost out of time, so I also wanted to ask you real quick, Sean, one of your first breakout roles was The Goldbergs. It ended a year ago, but I’m curious if you’ve ever thought about a revival in the future, since so many of these shows have come back after being off the air for a while?
Sean Giambrone: Oh, I certainly would. I would jump back in a heartbeat. I don’t know when it would happen, or if there would be any talks about it, but they always have some cool Halloween stuff and yes, I would be back. I would like to go back to the 80s. I miss it, because it is one of the greatest times. I would definitely be ready for it, but no, not sure when it would happen, but I’m game.
Mary Mack: No, I don’t want Sean to remake The Goldbergs. I have three scripts I want Sean to be in, I just haven’t had time to tell him. He is not allowed! [Laughs]
Sean Giambrone: After my projects with Mary, I will be back for the Goldbergs. [Laughs]
Mary Mack: Yes, once he does my scripts, he’s open. But it will take a while.
About The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October
Spooky stuff ensues when the spirit of HALLOWEEN starts to take over Corvo’s life. “Solar Opposites” centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly split on whether Earth is terrible or awesome. Corvo (Dan Stevens) and Yumiluck (Sean Giambrone) see only the pollution, crass consumerism and human weakness while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love TV, junk food and fun. In Season 5 of “Solar Opposites,” now that alien mission partners Terry and Corvo are married, the entire Solar Opposites team is focused on family values.
