Marvel TVA are finally starring in their own miniseries after their recent streaming success on Disney+ Lokiand Marvel has just revealed that WolverineThe Forgotten Son of will join them as they assemble their own multiversal Avengersstyle team. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to step out of his father’s short, sharp shadow.
The first look at David Yardin’s variant cover for TVA #3 has seemingly revealed that Jimmy Hudson, son of the original Ultimate Wolverine, will work with the titular organization, which makes perfect sense for his role as a multiversal misfit. TVA comes from Katharyn Blair and Pere Pérez.
Jimmy first appeared as the star of 2010 Final X #1written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Arthur Adams. The story was set shortly after the death of the original Ultimate Wolverine and established Jimmy as his replacement. What readers wouldn’t have guessed from these humble beginnings is that Jimmy would last for decades, move into the main Marvel continuity, and eventually join something like the TVA.
The TVA team is turning several variant heroes into an Avengers-style superteam, including Spider-Gwen and Peggy Carter’s Captain Britain.
Jimmy Hudson, the Ultimate Son of the Wolverine Universe, Is Joining the New TVA Team
Jimmy Hudson’s venom hasn’t been seen in years
Surprisingly, Jimmy was one of the few survivors of the original Ultimate Universe after its destruction in 2015. Secret Warswritten by Jonathan Hickman with art by Esad Ribić. He appeared in writer Cullen Bunn X-Men: Blue shortly thereafter, teaming up with the anti-symbiote predator known as Poison. Unfortunately, six years passed without any further adventures for Jimmy, and he only recently returned in Cullen Bunn and Roberto Di Salvo’s film. Poison War: Deadpool #1.
The series revealed that Jimmy is hiding in the underground Monster Metropolis, losing even more control of his mind to the Poison symbiote. Fortunately, things are looking up, as the art apparently reveals that TVA’s new alternate universe superhero team will include Jimmy.
It’s TVA’s time to shine
Giving the time-varying authority its own avengers is a genius idea
The TVA, also known as the Time Variance Authority, has existed in Marvel for decades, but only recently with its starring role in Disney+ Loki they became important players. Their job is to clean up the mess in the Marvel timeline and they often find themselves working at odds with characters like the Fantastic Four. Part of the TVA’s appeal is that they’ve always poked fun at Marvel editorial’s own desire to maintain continuity, and in an era where fans are obsessed with “lore,” it makes perfect sense that they’re having a moment.
The new TVA series will include a Avengers-style alternate universe variant teamincluding Spider-Gwen, Peggy Carter, and a Channing Tatum-style Gambit, as well as members who look like the MCU’s Hunter B-15, Sylvie, Mobius, and Ouroboros. Pérez’s cover essentially confirms that Jimmy Hudson will soon be joining this superteam to investigate a serial killer stalking the TVA offices.
The TVA superteam is probably Jimmy Hudson’s last chance to take off as the character.
This is likely the last chance for Wolverine’s long-lost son
TVA needs to make Jimmy feel unique
After six years in the shadows, the question is whether Jimmy has any future beyond this miniseries. If he wants to continue as the character, it’s vital that he gets a consistent characterization and motive that sets him apart from the rest of Wolverine’s family. His lack of staying power in other stories proves that ‘blond, slightly younger Wolverine’ simply isn’t enough, while the symbiote angle has failed to earn him the stories he needs to shine.
As a series that will explicitly address its heroes being multiversal variants, there is genuine hope that TVA I can find a unique angle on Jimmygiving it new life in Marvel lore. However, it’s also likely that this is the character’s last chance to really take off. Will Jimmy Hudson continue to be a third-rate person? Wolverine forever, or is he about to find a new interdimensional purpose in the TVA’s makeshift system? Avengers?
TVA #1 will arrive on December 18th from Marvel Comics, with TVA #3 after February 26, 2025.
