in NYXFour of the five Stepford Cuckoos joined the new villain team, while Sophie Cuckoo broke away as part of the book’s heroic cast.
Hellion, aka Julian Keller, is a telekinetic powerhouse and one of the stars of New Mutants (Volume 2) and its continuation New X-Men (Vol. 2)The most popular ‘Young Mutant’ books of the 2000s. Julian, an extremely powerful telekinetic, became the leader of Emma Frost’s second hellions team, which he named himself after. While he has grown since his first appearances, Julian has always had the potential for villainy. He’s now seemingly gone full mutant supremacist, forcing human/mutant confrontation in order to hasten mutants becoming Earth’s dominant speciesWhat has been predicted to happen in decades.
Empath, Manuel de la Rocha, is one of the aforementioned original Hellions. Empath’s mind control powers have shaped him into a sociopath, best explored in the Krakoan Era book hellions. The Stepford Cuckoos, meanwhile, are the group of clones introduced in writer Grant Morrison’s New X-Men (Vol. 1). The identical cuckoos refer to each other as sisters, which they originally believed themselves to be, but do not always see eye to eye. in NYXFour of the five Stepford Cuckoos joined the new villain team, while Sophie Cuckoo broke away as part of the book’s heroic cast.

A battle of telepaths is brewing NYX #1 Highlights how even the book’s heroes have different opinions about what Krakoa meant, and the new team will force those beliefs to the forefront as heroes and villains battle both literally and ideologically.
Notably, the power signatures around three of the four Stepford Cuckoos in NYX #1 suggests they are controlled by empaths, but that means one isn’t. The most obvious evil cuckoo is Esme Cuckoo. in New X-Men (Vol. 1)It was Esme who betrayed the team, allying with the evil Xorn and pushing Sophie Cuckoo to risk her life, resulting in Sophie’s death. With Sophie as a hero in the book, it would Makes sense to make Esme a villain again, to give the sisters the rivalry they never had, after their respective resurrections on Krakoa.
However, what is most interesting is the potential of this team to be more than basic supervillains. While their acts of terrorism against humans are horrific, there is a political angle to their actions reminiscent of classic X-Men enemies like the Mutant Liberation Front. NYX #1 Highlights how even the book’s heroes have different opinions about what Krakoa meant, and the new team will force those beliefs to the forefront as heroes and villains battle both literally and ideologically. It’s not just Ann X-Men Battle, but a fight over the memory and legacy of Krakoa.
